We're off! Tottenham get us underway, attacking from right to left.
Good afternoon and welcome to our live text commentary of today’s Premier League game between Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal at White Hart Lane.
Tottenham’s decision to play all of their home games at Wembley next season means that today’s huge clash will be the last North London derby at White Hart Lane. The home side will be hoping they can mark the occasion with three valuable points, especially seeing as league leaders Chelsea, who they're chasing so desperately, were victorious again this afternoon.
Wednesday’s hard-fought 1-0 win away to Crystal Palace means that Tottenham head into this afternoon’s game with eight consecutive Premier League victories under their belts. Only Liverpool have managed to beat them in a league game since the defeat against Manchester United midway through December, with 15 of their last 18 outings ending in wins.
In stark contrast to their local rivals, it hasn’t been the best of times for Arsenal in recent months, despite a slight improvement in form since the start of the month. A chastening defeat away to Palace remains their only loss in April, but only four victories from their last 10 league outings represents a worryingly poor return for the Gunners.
A switch to a back three seems to have helped Arsenal improve defensively, but they were hardly convincing in recent wins against Middlesbrough and Leicester City. The victory against the latter only came thanks to a late Robert Huth own-goal, whilst Mesut Ozil had to bail out his side against Boro. As a result, they’re in desperate need of a much better performance here today if they’re to leave with anything.
North London derbies have been closely fought and entertaining affairs in recent years, with neither side managing to get the better of the other in any of their last three meetings. Tottenham’s last league victory against Arsenal came on this very ground in February 2015, whilst the Gunners last won a year earlier thanks to an early goal scored by the now departed Tomas Rosicky.
There’s just over 15 minutes left to go until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this afternoon…
Arsenal substitutes: Ospina, Holding, Bellerin, Coquelin, Iwobi, Walcott, Welbeck.
Arsenal XI (3-4-2-1): Cech; Gabriel, Koscielny, Monreal; Oxlade-Chamberlain, Xhaka, Ramsey, Gibbs; Ozil, Sanchez; Giroud.
Tottenham Hotspur substitutes: Vorm, Wimmer, Walker, Sissoko, Dembele, N’Koudou, Janssen.
Tottenham Hotspur XI (4-2-3-1): Lloris; Trippier, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Davies; Dier, Wanyama; Eriksen, Alli, Son; Kane.
Mauricio Pochettino has decided to make two changes to the Tottenham side that started the 1-0 win against Palace during the week, with Kieran Trippier and Heung-Min Son coming into the starting line-up to replace Kyle Walker and Mousa Dembele.
Meanwhile, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has made three alterations to the team that featured in their last outing, with Hector Bellerin, Francis Coquelin and Theo Walcott making way for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Aaron Ramsey and Olivier Giroud.
The two sides are making their way out onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.
HALF-TIME: TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 0-0 ARSENAL
Tottenham have arguably been the better of the two sides, and they should really be in front through either Alli or Eriksen. Both were presented with great opportunities to open the scoring, and since then the home side have struggled to break through the Arsenal back line. At the other end, the visitors have created few chances, but they started to show some signs of life as the half-time break approached.
The two teams are making their way back out on to the pitch ahead of the start of the second half. Neither side have made any substitutions during the half-time break.
FULL-TIME: TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR 2-0 ARSENAL
Tottenham were on top of their rivals from start to finish, and they fully deserve to leave with three valuable points. White Hart Lane's last ever North London derby saw its hosts extend their Premier League winning run to nine games for the first time since 1960, and it's a result that keeps them hot on the heels of leaders Chelsea.
For Arsenal, the defeat is both chastening and deeply damaging. Not only did it come at the hands of their bitter rivals but denied them the opportunity to move to within two points of Manchester United. Instead, they remain five points behind them in sixth place, and they've now got to take on the Red Devils in their next outing.
