Penalty shootout: S. McTominay (Manchester United) missed!
91'
Penalty shootout: M. Kovačić (Real Madrid) missed!
Penalty shootout: A. Martial (Manchester United) missed!
90' +3
To penalties we go!
90' +2
Manchester United have misfired all half. They brought their big names on for the second half, but they have made little impact, failing to carry through the momentum handed to them by Jesse Lingard's goal late in the first half. It looks like penalties will decide things.
90'
There will be three minutes added on at the end of this match, to accommodate the water break.
88'
Not many would have predicted how this second half has played out. Real Madrid's youth players keep coming at United in the dying stages, applying relentless pressure as the clock ticks towards the 90th minute. If this game remains tied at full-time, there will be penalties to decide it.
Minute
Description
86'
STAT: Manchester United have won eight of their 10 all-time matches in the International Champions Cup (L2), including a 3-1 victory over Real Madrid in 2014.
85'
Óscar Rodríguez gets yellow.
Oscar picks up the first booking of the match.
83'
SHOCKING MISS! That's hard to fathom! McTominay comes away with the ball on the right and picks out a superb delivery for Fellaini, who was left all alone in the centre of the box, eight yards from goal. He had time to take one, two or three touches there even, but opts to go at it first-time and gets it all wrong, lifting his effort a good 15 yards over the bar!
81'
Hakimi makes a strong overlapping run and crosses in for Dani Gomez, but the striker just fails to get on the end of it. There's much more desire about this Real Madrid side in the second half. They're winning every battle and getting after the ball with great determination, and Manchester United are simply out of answers.
79'
Two important defensive contributions here from Tejero, as Manchester United try and ramp up the pressure, though they're having little success. Frustration is setting in for the Red Devils.
77'
A. Valencia enters the game and replaces M. Darmian.
Antonio Valencia replaces Darmian as the water break comes to an end.
75'
And as we reach the 75th minute, it signals the start of the two-minute water break. Play will be back underway shortly. Meanwhile, it looks as though Mourinho is ready to make another change.
73'
STAT: This is the 12th all-time meeting between the two clubs. Real Madrid hold the slight edge with four wins to Manchester United’s three (D2).
71'
Parity restored now, everything to play for in the final 20 minutes. Jose Mourinho will have been thrilled with how his side performed in the first half, and giddy about the prospect of adding to their lead after the substitutions made at the break, but there's been a role reversal, as it's Zidane who's the one who has been pleasantly surprised now.
69'
Penalty goal scored by Casemiro for Real Madrid!
SMASHED HOME! An emphatic and clinical penalty from Casemiro! He's wearing the captain's armband in this second half and he powers a spot-kick beyond De Gea and into the ceiling of the goal!
68'
PENALTY TO REAL MADRID! No holding up for Lindelof who committed himself to the challenge but got the timing all wrong as he swipes the legs of Theo Hernandez out from under him, and Lindelof knew straight away what he had done.
66'
Pogba has hardly been involved in this second half. Manchester United need to make a statement in this second half, that they aren't going to be second best agaist what is essentially the Real Madrid youth team. The likes of Pogba, Lukaku and Mkhitaryan really need to start getting going.
64'
STAT: Real Madrid have scored at least a goal in 69 successive matches across all competitions, including pre-season, dating back to a 0-0 draw at Manchester City in April 2016.
62'
Real Madrid are looking better in this second half than they did in the first, despite making 11 changes, the bulk of which saw youth players come into the side. They have more life about them, and are proving more responsible in possession as well.
60'
Exquisite delivery! Reminiscent of the cross Blind provided for Van Persie in the 2014 World Cup, he bends a delightful delivery in for Lukaku from over 40 yards, but the striker whiffs on his header. It runs through for Fellaini at the far post, but the midfielder is taken by surprise and is unable to control.
58'
Manchester United are struggling to get as little as a touch on the ball. They haven't seen any time in possession in close to two minutes, and they're coming under pressure now as they have to defend a free-kick after McTominay fouled Casemiro in the centre, 25 yards from goal.
56'
Well these Real Madrid youngsters have made quite an impression in the first 10 minutes of this second half, going toe to toe with Manchester United's big guns. They all have a point to prove, looking to sneak into the first team for the upcoming season, and the added motivation is doing wonders for them.
54'
STAT: Manchester United have scored nine goals in their last three pre-season matches.
52'
S. McTominay enters the game and replaces Ander Herrera.
Herrera gave it a go, but he can't continue and Mourinho is very upset with the referee as the midfielder is quickly replaced by Scott McTominay.
50'
Real Madrid have plenty of youth on the pitch, and with youth comes inexperience. Conversely, Manchester United have brought many of their big guns on, as they will fancy their chances of widening their lead in this second half.
48'
Early worries in this second half for Manchester United as Herrera goes down clutching his back. It was a hard knock, but he didn't appear to tweak anything. Of course that's the last thing you want in the pre-season.
46'
V. Lindelöf enters the game and replaces E. Bailly.
Kiko Casilla enters the game and replaces K. Navas.
David de Gea enters the game and replaces S. Romero.
Óscar Rodríguez enters the game and replaces Isco.

Real Madrid make a wide array of changes as well. Dani Gomez comes on for Benzema.

The second half is underway, amidst wholesale changes from both sides.
David de Gea, who is the at the centre of transfer rumours between the two sides, replaces Romero at the break.
45' +3
HALF-TIME: REAL MADRID 0-1 MANCHESTER UNITED.
45' +1
J. Lingard has scored a goal for Manchester United! Assist by A. Martial.
This is one of those cases where the assist holds far more weight than the goal, and Lingard knows it, pointing straight at Martial after he tapped in.
OH MY IS THAT EVER SPECIAL! Anthony Martial with some absolutely sublime footwork as he dribbles his way through the three Madrid players in the tightest of spaces inside the area before serving up a low cross on a platter for Lingard to tap in! You will see that on highlight reels for weeks to come!
44'
GREAT CROSS! And it comes on the end of a terrific bit of individual skill from Modric, who then lashes the ball across the face of goal. It eludes Romero, but Bailly is on hand to clear. Someone has to be attacking that!
42'
INCHES WIDE! Lingard has been one of the stars of Manchester United's pre-season, as he enters the first of his new four-year deal. He does very well here to dribble his way beyond a few defenders and rifle a shot at goal from 25 yards, but it drifts just beyond the near post. Moments later and United are back in attack, but Rashford can't turn himself around to pick out a pass.
41'
Possession is being dominated by Real Madrid in the late stages of this first half, but there's still no way through for them. It looks like they finally have an opening as Bale is sprung into space down the left, but his cross is cleared admirably by Jones at the far post.
39'
STAT: The last six matches between these two sides have produced 25 goals.
37'
Real Madrid get the chance to negotiate a chance from a free-kick, but Modric's delivery is cleared away by a red shirt. This has to be getting frustrated for the Champions League winners, who are not used to being stifled like this.
35'
Real Madrid spending some more time in attack here, but they can find no way through this sturdy Manchester United backline. This has been a very impressive showing from the United defence, up against one of Europe's most dangerous attacks.
33'
The two-minute break should be added on at the end of the first half. Play is back underway now.
31'
The brutal heat in California is also certainly playing a role in this first half, as the players are granted a water break here with 15 minutes to play in the half. It's a necessarily for player safety, and also provides these managers with a minute or two to talk to their players.
29'
STAT: Real Madrid have won five of their last six matches in the International Champions Cup (L1), to follow a string of four successive defeats in the competition.
27'
Manchester United back in the attacking half now, but it's proving hard enough for them to keep possession, let alone create something with it. Everywhere the ball goes there's at least one white shirt that follows, as space is proving minimal for Mourinho's troops on the front foot.
25'
Chances have been few and far between in this first half. Navas had the one save to make, and Romero was thrust into action to clear an early cross from Benzema, but otherwise it's been an incredibly quiet match thus far for either keeper.
23'
Manchester United are finding it much harder to penetrate than they did in that clinical display against Manchester City last week. Real Madrid are wise to the threat they pose on the break, and they are doing well to suffocate their attempts to counter.
21'
Real Madrid are growing in the ascendency, as they enjoy a prolonged spell of possession inside the attacking half. It's far from threatening, but they look much more comfortable in keeping the ball. It ends as Bale is flagged offside after being played through by Marcelo.
19'
STAT: Manchester United’s last eight International Champions Cup matches have seen a total of 26 goals (3.25 per match).
17'
There's no real tempo to speak of at the moment, with the match growing increasingly congested in midfield. Neither side are able to really find their way into attack, and both have resorted to a negative approach in order to try and keep possession.
15'
Real Madrid are still shaking off their off-season rust. There's no rhythm to their play whatsoever. It's all rather pedestrian and harmless from them as they pass it around in their own end, and it all goes awry when they cross the halfway line.
13'
Martial and Lingard are looking especially lively in the early stages of this match, with Fellaini also proving prominent in midfield. Real Madrid are not spending nearly as much time as they are used to in possession, and the bulk of it is coming in their own half.
11'
Manchester United have made a habit of starting strong over the course of their pre-season, and today is proving no different despite the stern opposition. Mourinho has his boys ticking along nicely, as they continue to assert their influence on the match.
9'
STAT: Ashley Young scored a brace and Javier Hernandez added a third as Manchester United beat Real Madrid 3-1 in the International Champions Cup in August 2014 in Michigan, the only previous meeting between the two sides not on European soil.
7'
Despite the strong team selection from Zidane, it's United who have dictated the tempo and looked the more composed side in the early stages, with Navas just forced into his first save of the match. It could very well be down to the fact that United are right in the middle of their pre-season, while Real Madrid's is only just beginning.
5'
Smart hands from Romero as he gets off his line, albeit a bit awkwardly, to parry Benzema's teasing cross amidst a crowd, with Bale attacking. That's the first sign of life we have seen from Real Madrid, however, as they have come a bit sluggish out of the gate.
3'
We should expect to see two very different halves in this match. Real Madrid will likely dictate the first, based on the starting line-ups, but wholesale changes at the interval, which has been a theme in this tournament, should see a stronger Manchester United side face a youthful Real Madrid team in the second.
1'
AND THEY'RE OFF! Manchester United in red and black as they get the match underway, attacking left to right, with Real Madrid in white.
Hello and welcome to Levi’s Stadium in California for live coverage of this delectable friendly between Real Madrid and Manchester United!
Real Madrid have been idle since their 4-1 Champions League success against Juventus at the start of June, but this match kicks off a mouth-watering pre-season for them, which includes matches against Manchester City, Barcelona and the MLS All-Stars.
This transfer window has not proven the busiest for Real Madrid just yet, with more departures than arrivals, but the rumours are swirling about surrounding a couple of big names and you know it’s likely just a matter of time before they flex their spending muscle.
Manchester United likely are not done spending either, but they have already flexed the cash this window with the expensive purchase of Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku, who has impressed early in his tenure, scoring in each of his first two starts against Real Salt Lake and Manchester City.
It’s been a winning pre-season thus far for Jose Mourinho’s men, as they have claimed three victories from three matches, defeating MLS sides LA Galaxy and Real Salt Lake, before beating their rivals Manchester City on Thursday night – a run of form they would love to keep going tonight against the Champions League winners.
CONFIRMED TEAM NEWS:
REAL MADRID (4-3-3): Navas; Carvajal, Varane, Nacho, Marcelo; Modric, Kroos, Isco; Lucas, Bale, Benzema.
MANCHESTER UNITED (4-2-3-1): Romero; Fosu-Mensah, Bailly, Jones, Darmian; Fellaini, Carrick; Lingard, A. Pereira, Martial; Rashford.
SUBS: De Gea, J. Pereira, Blind, Lindelof, Mitchell, Smalling, Tuanzebe, Valencia, Herrera, McTominay, Mkhitaryan, Pogba, Lukaku.
Zinedine Zidane names what is essentially a full-strength squad for Real Madrid's pre-season opener, with the exception of Cristiano Ronaldo who is touring China with Nike. Karim Benzema leads the line, flanked by Lucas Vazquez and Gareth Bale, with Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Isco in midfield. Daniel Carvajal and Marcelo start at full-back, with Nacho and Raphael Varane at centre-half and Kaylor Navas in goal. New signing Theo Hernandez is on the bench.
Jose Mourinho makes nine changes from the victory over Manchester City, with Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard the lone holdovers. Many prominent names have been left on the bench - Paul Pogba, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Romelu Lukaku - but should feature in the second half. Sergio Romero starts in goal with rumoured Real Madrid target David de Gea on the bench.
Manchester United's terrific pre-season form has continued as they do an excellent job of limiting Real Madrid to no shots on target in the first half, before Anthony Marial's sensational assist teed up Jesse Lingard for the opener in stoppage-time, sending them into the break with the lead.
It was a tale of two halves today in California, but not what most would have expected. Manchester United's B team took the game to the Real Madrid stars in the first half, handing a 1-0 over to their big guns following Jesse Lingard's late goal, but the youth of Los Blancos shined through in the final 45 minutes as they drew level through Casemiro's penalty to force a shootout to decide things....
INTO THE CROWD! Martial dazzled with his assist in the first half, but it clearly hasn't helped his confidence as he blasts over to start the shootout!
CASILLA RESPONDS! Will we ever see a goal?! McTominay puts his penalty in the same spot as Kovacic's, and his is denied!
NOPE! Two misses to start the shootout, as De Gea get across to save a rather tame penalty from Kovacic.
UNITED LEAD! Mkhitaryan strictly business as he walks up and rolls his penalty into the bottom corner, sending Casilla the wrong way.
THE DROUGHT CONTINUES! Scoreless through two rounds of the shootout as set-piece specialist Oscar is denied by a fine stop from De Gea!
IT'S NOT HIS DAY! Lindelof shoots straight down the middle and Casilla is having none of it!
1-1! De Gea gets a hand to it yet again, but can't keep out Quezada's effort as it bounces in to restore parity in the shootout.
THEO MISSES AS WELL! Just 1-1 through four rounds of the shootout as Real Madrid's new signing fires wide of the mark!
UNITED WIN IT! Casemiro, who pulled Real Madrid level with his second-half penalty, is unable to replicae it in the shootout, putting his spot-kick off the bar as Real Madrid lose their pre-season opener!
ADVANTAGE UNITED! Cool as you'd like from Blind who also fires down the middle, but he's able to send Casilla elsewhere.
FULL-TIME: REAL MADRID 1-1 MANCHESTER UNITED (1-2 PENS).
Neither side managed to impress in the shootout, but United edge it in the end as Casemiro hit the bar after Blind managed to give the Red Devils the lead, though the Brazilian is hardly the villain for Los Blancos who netted just one of their five attempts beyond De Gea. That's all for our live coverage, thanks for following along. Goodbye!
