We're off! Manchester United get us underway, attacking from right to left.
Good afternoon and welcome to our live text commentary of today's Premier League game between Manchester United and West Ham United at Old Trafford.
Another year, another desperate push for the upper echelons of the Premier League table for Manchester United. After sacrificing their domestic aspirations for the Europa League last season, Jose Mourinho will be well aware that his big spending side simply must do better than the sixth-place finish they managed in the Portuguese boss’ first campaign in charge.
In order to achieve this, the 20-time top-tier champions have invested heavily over the summer, with around £140m being splashed to bring in Victor Lindelof, Nemanja Matic and, most notably, Romelu Lukaku. The latter two are set to start today, and most eyes in the stadium will be on the club’s star striker as he goes in search of his first league goal for the Red Devils.
Last season’s debut campaign in the London Stadium wasn’t the happiest of years for West Ham, who have struggled to get to grips with their new surroundings. A series of disappointing results led many to believe that Slaven Bilic would get the axe over the summer, but the club’s owners have not only decided to stick with the Croatian but have also spent just shy of £40m on new players for him.
The most notable new faces in the West Ham ranks are Marko Arnautovic and former Manchester United striker Javier Hernandez, both of whom are in today’s starting line-up. The latter is a proven goalscorer and was a steal at only £16m, whilst Arnautovic was consistently one of Stoke City’s standout performers during his four years with the Potters.
Two goals each for Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Anthony Martial helped Manchester United come away with a comfortable 4-1 win in the last meeting between the two sides at Old Trafford, and it’s now over 10 years since West Ham last tasted victory here. They did manage to hold the Red Devils to a 1-1 draw in the league, however, only for Mourinho’s men to win 2-0 at the London Stadium back in January.
There’s just over 15 minutes left to go until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this afternoon…
West Ham United substitutes: Adrian, Byram, Cresswell, Fonte, Collins, Rice, Sakho.
West Ham United XI (4-3-3): Hart; Zabaleta, Reid, Ogbonna, Masuaku; Noble, Obiang, Fernandes; Ayew, Hernandez, Arnautovic.
Manchester United substitutes: Romero, Smalling, Darmian, Fellaini, Herrera, Martial, Lingard.
Manchester United XI (4-3-3): De Gea; Valencia, Bailly, Jones, Blind; Mata, Matic, Pogba; Mkhitaryan, Lukaku, Rashford.
There aren’t too many surprises in the side Jose Mourinho’s picked today. As expected, Romelu Lukaku leads the line and Nemanja Matic will feature in the heart of the Manchester United midfield, whilst Daley Blind has been preferred to Matteo Darmian, who started in the Super Cup on Tuesday, at left-back.
As for West Ham, Slaven Bilic has decided to hand debuts to Joe Hart, Pablo Zabaleta, Marko Arnautovic and Javier Hernandez, the latter of whom spent five years here as a Manchester United player. Hart and Zabaleta both joined from Manchester City and would surely love to get one over the Red Devils this afternoon.
The two sides are making their way out onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.
HALF-TME: MANCHESTER UNITED 1-0 WEST HAM UNITED
So far, so good for the home side, who head into the break with a well-deserved one-goal lead thanks to a first goal in a red shirt for Lukaku. West Ham have really struggled to cause many problems for the hosts, who have put their opponents under plenty of pressure with impressive pressing all over the pitch. Manchester United's front line have looked really dangerous, and it's caused some real problems for the Hammers' defence.
The two teams are making their way back out on to the pitch ahead of the start of the second half. Neither side have made any substitutions during the half-time break.
FULL-TIME: MANCHESTER UNITED 4-0 WEST HAM UNITED
What a start to the new season for Manchester United, who were comfortably on top from start to finish. They never looked back after making it 2-0, and from then onwards they were all over West Ham. The visitors seemed to totally collapse, allowing far too much space to open up in and around their own penalty area.
