We're underway at the Mestalla.
Zidane's men still have overwhelming quality in the final third, which was proved last week when Deportivo La Coruna's opener at the Bernabeu jolted them into life. Braces from Nacho, Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo along with a Luka Modric strike guided Madrid to a 7-1 victory. However, their defeats to Barcelona and Villarreal have displayed a vulnerability not present in the team last season.
Real Madrid suffered a shocking defeat at the hands of Leganes during the week to be knocked out of the Copa del Rey. Goals from Javier Eraso and Gabriel Pires did the damage to secure the victory for the visitors on away goals, despite a strike from Karim Benzema. Zinedine Zidane paid the price for making changes as many of the team's youthful players failed to rise to the occasion.
Although Valencia are third in the table, their league form has been up-and-down over the last month. The club did suffer a 2-1 defeat to Las Palmas last time out - their third in five matches, but wins over Girona and Deportivo La Coruna have kept them in the top four.
Valencia were able to advance to the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey during the week, despite their defeat on the night against Alaves. Marcelino's men won the contest on penalties to secure a last-four berth, where they will face Barcelona.
Good afternoon and welcome to the live commentary of the LaLiga clash between Valencia and Real Madrid at the Mestalla.
The team news has been announced and we'll start with the home side.
Real Madrid subs: Casilla, Hernandez, Vazquez, Llorente, Asensio, Mayoral, Kovacic.
Valencia have made six changes from their team that played Alaves during the week. Neto takes his place back between the sticks, while Ezequiel Garay and Francis Coquelin start in the heart of the defence. Toni Lato starts at left-back, which sends Jose Gaya forward into the midfield, while Goncalo Guedes switches to the right flank. Santi Mina and Rodrigo Moreno lead the line in place of Simone Zaza and Luciano Vietto.
STAT ATTACK! Valencia have only won two of their last 17 games against Real Madrid in La Liga (D6 L9), the last one at the Mestalla in February 2017.
STAT ATTACK! Valencia are unbeaten in their last three league games against Real Madrid at the Mestalla (W2 D1) - they haven’t remained unbeaten in four or more since January 1992 (five).
FLASHBACK! The two sides played out a 2-2 draw in their meeting earlier this season. Madrid needed a late strike from Marco Asensio - his second of the game - rescue a point for them at the Bernabeu after Carlos Soler and Geoffrey Kondogbia had put Marcelino's men ahead.
REAL MADRID (4-3-3): Navas; Carvajal, Nacho, Varane, Marcelo; Kroos, Modric, Casemiro; Bale, Benzema, Ronaldo.
Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo start together for the first time since the 23rd April last year. Bale and Ronaldo come back into the fold in two of nine changes made by Zidane. Keylor Navas, Dani Carvajal, Raphael Varane, Marcelona, Luka Modrid, Toni Kroos and Casemiro all return to action, with only Nacho and Benzema retaining their places from the defeat to Leganes.
HALF-TIME: VALENCIA 0-2 REAL MADRID
A brace from the penalty spot from Cristiano Ronaldo has handed Real Madrid a 2-0 lead at the break, although the scoreline is not a fair reflection of the match as Valencia have been active in the final third. Two defensive mistakes from Martin Montoya have put the home side behind as he brought down Ronaldo for the first spot-kick before clattering into Karim Benzema for the second. Ronaldo punished the full-back for his errors, but Marcelino's men have had openings to hit back. Geoffrey Kondogbia was denied by Keylor Navas, while the Frenchman also spurned an opening before Madrid's second. Rodrigo Moreno and Goncalo Guedes also went close, but the home side have been unable to find a way through.
FULL-TIME: VALENCIA 1-4 REAL MADRID
Thanks for joining our commentary this afternoon. Until next time, goodbye.
Real Madrid respond to their shocking exit from the Copa del Rey with a fine performance to defeat Valencia this afternoon. The scoreline is slightly flattering as the home side had the better of the second half. However, a brace from the penalty spot from Cristiano Ronaldo along with late strikes from Marcelo and Toni Kroos secured the victory. Santi Mina's second-half goal gave Marcelino's men hope of salvaging a point, but Madrid were clinical to claim the victory on the road.
