Cabaye sorry for Cahill send off

Newcastle's Yohan Cabaye apologised for his 'cross words' with Tim Cahill that saw Cahill sent off for grabbing the Frenchman by the throat.

Seconds after the final whistle sounded on Everton's 3-1 win over Newcastle at Goodison Park on Sunday (local time), an angry Cahill had to be dragged away from Cabaye.

Cabaye had earlier apologised to a ball boy after pushing him aside while retrieving a ball in the first half.

Everton manager David Moyes said: "Tim was upset because Cabaye said something to him."

Cabaye was shown a yellow card by referee Andre Marriner for his part in the incident, and has since apologised for his actions.

"I would like to apologise for the cross words I exchanged with Tim Cahill which resulted in his red card and my booking on the final whistle," Cabaye said.

"It was unnecessary and, regrettably, the result of frustration and disappointment, all in the heat of the moment. It is out of character and for that I am sorry."

Cahill, a regular user of Twitter, is yet to write anything about the incident on the social media website.

The 32-year-old Socceroo has endured a tough season, scoring just twice in the Premier League as Everton finished seventh.
