Bardsley does accidentally to shepherd the ball out of play, as Giggs breathes down his neck. He's had an excellent game against his former club. Mannone is booked for time-wasting, as the Italian decides to take far too long over taking a goal kick.
90' +2
Gus Poyet is going ballistic in his technical area, not least because he doesn't understand why five minutes of added time has been awarded. Sunderland still have three minutes left to survive.
90' +1
JANUZAJ! The youngster cuts inside, making his way slowly into the penalty area, before his left-footed strike is deflected behind by Brown. Another set piece is fired in, but Sunderland clear again. Carrick picks up the pieces, trying a long-range effort, but it's harmlessly wide.
90'
Good header from Brown! Rafael breaks into space down the right hand side, before whipping in a cross for his teammates to attack at the near post. Brown gets there first, nodding it behind for a corner.
88'
Despite being behind once again, United's travelling support is being very vocal in their backing of David Moyes. There is still another 90 minutes to play in this tie, and neither players nor fans appear to be panicking. Carrick feeds Welbeck in behind Sunderland's lines, but Bardsley slides in excellently to dispossess the England international.
87'
J. Hernández enters the game and replaces A. Valencia.
86'
FLETCHER! The substitute and Welbeck both challenge for a well-weighted Giggs cross, but O'Shea manages to beat them both to the ball. Backs to the wall stuff, but Sunderland are edging towards a very good result tonight.
84'
United are keen to push forward in search of an equaliser, as time begins to run out. Welbeck rises well in the centre of the penalty area to meet a looping cross, but can't place it to either side of Mannone. Sunderland continue to look quite comfortable.
83'
C. Smalling gets yellow.
82'
Alonso goes down holding his ankle, after diving into a challenge with Valencia. The Ecuador international tries to help the left-back onto his feet, but the Spaniard prefers to wait for the physio. He definitely took a blow to his ankle, but Sunderland might be tempted to waste a little bit of time now they're ahead.
Minute
Description
80'
EVRA! The Frenchman turns smartly, evading the rash challenge of Cattermole, before looking to place the ball into the far corner of Mannone's goal with the outside of his foot. Moyes returns to his bench, presumably frustrated.
79'
JANUZAJ! That man again! Valencia worked hard to get to the byline, after exchanging possession with Welbeck, cutting the ball back to the corner of the six yard box. Januzaj gets across his man cleverly, looking to flick the ball into the far corner, but instead sees his effort land on the roof of the net.
78'
Narrowly over ten minutes left to play, and United aren't looking as though they've got a goal up their sleeve. They've slogged away, seeing plenty of the ball, but chances haven't been forthcoming for anybody but Januzaj.
77'
J. Altidore gets yellow.
76'
Poor delivery from the right hand side, as Brown looks to shrug off Smalling and challenge at the back post. The home fans cheer regardless, as they can't complain with their side's efforts so far. Januzaj fires a volley towards goal, after Fletcher cushioned down a Valencia cross for the teenager, but he drags it wide.
74'
D. Fletcher enters the game and replaces T. Cleverley.
Johnson does well again down the right hand side, skipping beyond the challenges of Evra and Cleverley. The English midfielder hasn't had a pleasant outing tonight, giving away a penalty and generally chasing shadows throughout. Rightfully, he is substituted.
72'
J. Altidore enters the game and replaces S. Fletcher.
Altidore takes to the field for the home side, as Sunderland perhaps hope to clear the ball to the hefty forward who joined in the summer from AZ Alkmaar. The American hasn't looked like the goal threat he was in the Eredivisie, but he has a chance to put this game beyond doubt tonight.
70'
JANUZAJ! Very close for the teenager! He drove down the left hand side, before cutting onto his preferred right foot, curling a great effort narrowly wide of Mannone's far post. The Sunderland keeper was worried there!
68'
Just over twenty minutes to go, and Sunderland are already defending well, trying to force United back into their own half. Moyes certainly has a lot to think about now, with a few attacking options on the bench. Welbeck has been isolated throughout, with Januzaj being marked out of this second half.
66'
Rafael is warned for the final time by the referee, after the Brazilian right-back appeared to catch Borini with a late challenge. There wasn't much in that whatsoever, but the United defender is certainly on thin ice. One more rash decision could cost his side, much like his twin brother did against Swansea.
65'
Penalty goal scored by F. Borini for Sunderland!
GOOOOOOAL! FABIO BORINI CONVERTS, MAKING IT 2-1! The Liverpool loanee sends De Gea the wrong way, dispatching his penalty into the roof of the net powerfully! Poyet's men have something to hold onto now!
63'
Rafael gets yellow.
PENALTY TO SUNDERLAND! Cleverley looks incredulous, but the referee has pointed to the spot! Johnson burst into the penalty area, cutting in between Evra and Cleverley, before seemingly to be clipped by the England international. There was definitely contact!
62'
C. Smalling enters the game and replaces J. Evans.
LARSSON! Great save from De Gea! Fletcher manages to win the aerial duel in the centre of the box, with the ball favourably falling to the feet of the lurking Swede, who strikes sweetly with his first touch. De Gea is equal to the powerful effort though, beating it away for a corner.
61'
Valencia skips inside Alonso smartly, but is foiled by a covering defender, as United push for their second goal of the evening. Given the lack of service to Borini and Fletcher, it's certainly realistic to assume that Poyet's side would be glad to take a draw. Smalling replaces the injured Evans.
59'
P. Bardsley gets yellow.
LARSSON! The Swedish midfielder stood over one of his trademark free-kicks composedly, but his execution wasn't to match his focused build up. He lashes the effort over the bar by some distance, as Sunderland waste a good chance to regain the lead.
57'
BORINI! The Italian forward is played in behind Rafael, and drives strongly into the United penalty area, despite pressure from Evans. He unleashes a wild effort with his left foot, which hurtles into the advertising boards, as the former Chelsea youngster fails to hit the target once again.
56'
A. Johnson enters the game and replaces E. Giaccherini.
Poyet is the first manager to look to the bench, with Giaccherini being the first player to be replaced. The Italian looked good in his last outing, but has been rather anonymous this evening. Adam Johnson takes to the left hand side of the field.
55'
JANUZAJ! The youngster skips around Cattermole's challenge, with the ball skipped up off the turf invitingly. He takes a touch to set himself, before lashing a half-volley towards goal, but it's straight down Mannone's throat. Easy for the Italian goalkeeper.
54'
The travelling United supporters are really making themselves heard now, with their side drawing encouragement from their equaliser. Given the amount of possession that the visitors have enjoyed, and the amount of crosses Giggs has delivered invitingly, to be level is no more than Moyes' outfit deserves.
52'
N. Vidić has scored a goal for Manchester United! Assist by T. Cleverley.
GOOOOOOAL! VIDIC EQUALISES TO MAKE IT 1-1! The Serbian climbs excellently at the back post, nodding the ball into the far corner beyond the helpless Mannone, who had absolutely no chance. Moyes' side are right back in this, deservedly.
51'
E. Giaccherini gets yellow.
Good defensive header from Fletcher! The Sunderland poacher is back in his own box to divert a dangerous Giggs' free-kick delivery away from goal, but gives United the chance to try again from the set piece.
50'
United continue to press and probe, with the ball finding its way to Januzaj regularly, an outlet which Sunderland are quick to quell. Moyes may have to make a couple of changes to give the hosts something different to think about, as Januzaj is being closed down effectively.
48'
United win a free-kick on the right hand side, as Alonso fouls Valencia. Giggs whips in the delivery from deep, but Sunderland manage to clear on the second time of asking. Poyet's men aren't being disheartened by the long spells of United dominance, the likes of Ki and Cattermole in the middle of the park are making things difficult.
46'
We're back underway for the second half, and United have some work to do to get themselves back into this game. Moyes' men enjoyed the better of the first half, but not by much. A lack of cutting edge being the main issue, though Januzaj looked bright.
45' +2
R. Giggs is unfortunate, scores an own goal!
GOOOOOAL! PHIL BARDSLEY SCRAMBLES THE BALL HOME! In first half stoppage time, Sunderland have taken the lead! A free-kick was whipped in from deep, finding Brown unmarked, who squares excellently for his teammate. Giggs and Bardsley tangled on the line, and it could be the United midfielder who got the final touch.
45'
Januzaj is again the catalyst, driving towards the organised Sunderland lines, before spreading the play wide to Giggs. The former Wales international whips in a cross, searching for Welbeck, but Mannone is eager to come off his line and smother it.
43'
VIDIC! The Serbia international rises highest, with his header towards goal appearing to take a slight deflection as it bounced wide of the target. The referee ignores the defender's claims, however, awarding a goal kick - much to his displeasure.
42'
Only a few minutes until half time, and the visitors are building up some pressure. Januzaj exchanges a one-two with Evra, getting to the byline beyond the challenge of Cattermole, but Brown slides in to put the eventual cross behind for a United corner.
40'
BARDSLEY! The former United defender picked up a loose ball on the edge of the penalty area, but fires his low drive directly at De Gea. Both goalkeepers will be pleased with how this first half has gone, they've rarely been called into action.
38'
JANUZAJ! But it won't count! The youngster looked to have added to his tally at the Stadium of Light, tucking the ball home after his original strike was blocked by Ryan Giggs inadvertently. The Welshman was in an offside position, good spot by the linesman.
36'
Marcos Alonso continues to draw applause from his new fans, after composedly robbing Valencia of the ball and clearing upfield. So far, this game doesn't appear to have too many goals in it, though Moyes has Hernandez in reserve on the bench, who recently ended his longest scoring drought at United.
34'
Januzaj cuts inside from the left hand side, but his effort is blocked by Brown. Neither side are quite able to carve open enough space to get a shot away. De Gea and Mannone are yet to be tested, with the Italian being the only keeper to actually make a save.
32'
Vidic manages to step in front of Fletcher to clear the danger, as Alonso and Giaccherini combine well down the left hand side once again. The Fiorentina loanee hasn't been in the country for too long, but is already looking like a rather shrewd acquisition.
30'
Half an hour has passed, and chance haven't been forthcoming for either side. A deflected long-range effort from Giggs, and a tame effort which was dragged harmlessly wide by Borini are the only times when either side have looked like scoring. Cagey stuff.
29'
Danny Welbeck receives the ball to feet at the edge of the box with his back to goal, but didn't see the onrushing Cleverley calling for a lay-off. Inside, the ball is shifted out wide, being whipped in by Valencia, but O'Shea beats the English striker to the eventual cross.
27'
Evra could have gone down under the challenge off Cattermole, as the tenacious midfielder steps across the Frenchman, but he chooses to stay on his feet - thus running the ball out of play. Honest from the left-back, and it would have been a soft penalty, but they've been given in the past.
25'
GIGGS! CROSSBAR! The veteran cuts onto his favoured left foot, as a change of pace takes him away from Cattermole, but a slight deflection directs the ball onto the bar and over! After an all-action start, the game is settling down somewhat, with Sunderland prepared to allow United more time on the ball.
24'
P. Evra gets yellow.
23'
Januzaj has been causing plenty of problems for Sunderland, highlighting himself of Moyes' dangerman. After his two goals here earlier in the season, the hosts probably expected as much. Bardsley is the first to bring him down cynically, blocking off the teenager after he skipped around two challenges.
21'
Another good cross from Alonso! Rafael fails to stick with the Spaniard once again, and Fletcher is close to getting on the end of the delivery, though a deflection off Valencia skews the flight of the ball massively.
20'
Sunderland continue to work the ball nicely into the United half, forcing the travelling defence to set up along the 18 yard line with worrying regularity. However, they're yet to give Fletcher or Borini good enough service to fashion a chance for themselves. There isn't much space in between the lines once the hosts win possession.
18'
WELBECK! Finally, the visiting side register a short on target, but former Black Cats' loanee Welbeck can merely fire a tame effort into the awaiting arms of Mannone. The former Arsenal keeper didn't even have to re-position himself.
16'
Finally, Moyes' side manage to retain the ball, stroking it around the back four. Evans pushes into the midfield third, before trying to prod a ball in between Bardsley and O'Shea for Januzaj to chase, but the youngster isn't on the same wavelength, and Mannone is able to collect the loose ball.
14'
The away supporters are making themselves heard, despite their players not having much of an impact on proceedings thus far. There's still plenty of time left in this game, of course, but United's passing has been misplaced, and they're yet to press into the Black Cat's half for a substantial period.
12'
Sunderland continue to act as the dominant force as we pass the ten minute mark, with the likes of Alonso and Bardsley free to join the attack. Space opens up for Borini on the edge of the penalty area, but the Italy U21 international drags his effort well wide of the post.
10'
United win their first corner of the game, as Evra cannons the ball off Phil Bardsley, causing the ex-Red Devil to go down momentarily. He'll be fine to continue, after catching a rather powerful blow to the face. The set piece comes to nothing, despite Welbeck trying an ambitious overhead kick.
8'
Good cross from Alonso! Brown plays an incisive ball down the channel for Fletcher, who flicks the ball around the corner for the onrushing left-back Alonso. The Spaniard manages to wriggle free of Rafael, before whipping the ball across the six yard box, but noone was there!
7'
Sunderland really have their tails up here, and their supporters can sense it too. United don't look comfortable, being forced to clear wildly upfield, with the home side seeing much more of possession. Ki will be important for the hosts tonight, his ability to spray the ball around in midfield will really test the visitors.
6'
The home crowd are getting behind their side, as Poyet's men start rather positively. Man United are happy to sit back in their shape and to frustrate, perhaps looking to break up the field quickly with the likes of Valencia and Januzaj once they win the ball back.
4'
Welbeck is yet to see any of the ball in the opening minutes, with Sunderland looking to win the ball back at speed. The hosts look rather composed in possession, stroking the ball around the back four with no fear.
2'
The start of this game has been rather lacking in quality, with neither side able to hold onto possession for too long whatsoever. Januzaj has shown his intentions with a couple of ambitious runs down the left hand side, but Phil Bardsley has stopped the teenager in his tracks thus far.
1'
We are underway in the first half! Sunderland are in their customary red and white shirts, with Man United donning their purple and blue away strip. There's a good crowd on at the Stadium of Light, and this has all of the ingredients of a fiery semi-final clash.
Hello and welcome to Capital One Cup semi-final action between Sunderland and Manchester United, with David Moyes' side travelling to the Stadium of Light. The two sides have had contrasting experiences in cup competitions of late, with the Black Cats navigating their way into the next round of the FA Cup at the weekend, while tonight's away side crashed out at the hands of Swansea.
I'm Simon Harrison, and I will be keeping you up to date with proceedings from the north east, as Man United look to end a winless run of two games, without star players Wayne Rooney and Robin van Persie. Gus Poyet's Sunderland have only lost once in their last five games in all competitions, though tonight's hosts did suffer defeat on home soil against Aston Villa last week.
TEAM NEWS: As aforementioned, no Wayne Rooney or Robin van Persie for the away side, with Danny Welbeck shouldering the responsibility of playing up front on his own. Michael Carrick is a welcome addition to the midfield, with Ryan Giggs drafted into the side too. Wilfried Zaha is on the bench for the visitors, should they need an extra bit of flair.
TEAM NEWS: New loan signing Marcos Alonso slots in at left-back for the Black Cats, with Steven Fletcher and Fabio Borini again preferred to Jozy Altidore in attack. Cattermole and Ki continue their sturdy partnership in the centre of the park, with Poyet having a couple of central midfield options should be wish to change formation. Wes Brown and John O'Shea start against their former club.
Sunderland substitutes: Gardner, Johnson, Celustka, Colback, Altidore, Ji, Dixon.
Man United starting line-up: De Gea; Rafael, Vidic, Evans, Evra; Valencia, Carrick, Cleverley, Giggs, Januzaj; Welbeck.
Man United substitutes: Lindegaard, Smalling, Hernandez, Fletcher, Kagawa, Buttner, Zaha.
This, of course, is the first leg of the Capital One Cup semi-final, meaning that tonight's action is the decesive end to this match-up. Danny Welbeck will be keen to play against a club which he enjoyed a profitable loan spell with, while Sunderland have their own batch of Red Devils' old boys. Three of the Black Cats' back four have previously worn the strip of their opposition tonight.
Strange times for Man United, as tonight's visitors probably aren't safe in the knowledge that they could take a draw back to Old Trafford in two weeks' time. It certainly isn't a fortress this season, and Sunderland may feel as though they have an equally good chance to cause an upset both home and away.
Ten minutes until kick-off, and this game is far from being predictable. United aren't the infallable side of previous seasons, while Sunderland's ability to play well has been sporadic at best. The hosts don't lack in desire, but often in quality. Be sure to stay tuned for all of the action from the Stadium of Light!
HALF TIME! United have conceded in stoppage time in the first half, despite piling on the pressure merely minutes beforehand. A combination of Bardsley and Giggs have opened the scoring at the Stadium of Light, with the Welshman being involved in the two main chances of the first 45 minutes.
Giggs hit the bar with a long-range effort midway through the half, with Januzaj causing plenty of problems down the left hand side. Sunderland started well, but seemed to have run out of steam, with Fletcher and Borini seeing very little of the ball.
Three past and present United players were involved in the build up to Sunderland's breakthrough goal, with it now being awarded to Ryan Giggs. Brown centred the ball excellently, with Bardsley putting enough pressure on his former teammate to force the 40-year-old to prod the ball into his own net.
FULL TIME! Sunderland take a 2-1 lead in this Capital One Cup semi-final tie, thanks to an own goal from Ryan Giggs and a Fabio Borini penalty. An equaliser from Nemanja Vidic gave the visitors hope, as they played well for large periods, but it's the Black Cats who have the advantage heading into the second leg in two weeks' time.
Despite not testing David de Gea all too often, Sunderland can be pleased with their defensive display this evening. Januzaj caused plenty of problems for the home side, but United looked rather toothless but for their teenage talent.
Yet more misery for Man United, but there's another 90 minutes awaiting both of these teams yet, for a place in the Capital One Cup final. We hope that you've enjoyed our live coverage of Sunderland's 2-1 cup triumph over Man United this evening, I've been Simon Harrison, and I hope to see you all again next time.
