And we're off! Arsenal get us underway, attacking from left to right.
Good afternoon and welcome to our live text commentary of today’s Premier League game between Arsenal and Southampton at the Emirates Stadium.
After suffering a disappointing defeat and a frustrating draw against Liverpool and Leicester City, respectively, Arsenal finally picked up their first win of the season in their last game before the international break. Watford were the Gunners’ first scalp of the campaign, with the Hornets losing 3-1 in a game that finally saw Arsenal look like a relatively well oiled machine, despite still exhibiting a few of the problems that have characterised their injury-ridden defence so far this season.
With Manchester City already sitting eight points clear at the top of the table thanks to today's derby win, Arsenal will be looking to build on the victory at Vicarage Road as they attempt to keep up with the Premier League pacesetters. In an attempt to do so, Arsene Wenger has decided to throw both of his new signings straight into the starting line-up, with Shkodran Mustafi and Lucas Perez featuring at both ends of the pitch after signing from Valencia and Deportivo La Coruna, respectively.
As for Southampton, life under Claude Puel hasn’t got off to the best of starts. A draw against Watford and a defeat away to Manchester United came from their opening two games, whilst Sunderland were just five minutes away from picking up all three points before Jay Rodriguez salvaged a point for the Saints in their final game before the international break.
Puel must now face his old boss and mentor in what, even at this early stage of the season, is a game from which Southampton will be desperately trying to exact a positive result. The loss of Ronald Koeman to Everton during the summer was a huge blow for the Saints and their new manager has yet to indicate that he is the right man to lead them forward. A win here today would go a long way towards silencing his doubters.
Arsenal substitutes: Ospina, Holding, Elneny, Xhaka, Iwobi, Sanchez, Giroud.
Arsenal XI (4-2-3-1): Cech; Bellerin, Mustafi, Koscielny, Monreal; Coquelin, Cazorla; Walcott, Ozil, Oxlade-Chamberlain; Perez.
There’s just over 15 minutes left to go until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this afternoon…
Arsene Wenger has decided to make three changes to the Arsenal side that started the win against Watford, with Shkodran Mustafi, Francis Coquelin and Lucas Perez coming into the squad to replace Rob Holding, Granit Xhaka and Alexis Sanchez, all of whom drop to the substitutes’ bench.
Meanwhile, Southampton boss Claude Puel has also made three alterations to the side that featured against Sunderland before the international break, with Matt Targett, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Charlie Austin making way for Ryan Bertrand, Jordy Clasie and Jay Rodriguez.
The two sides are making their way out on to the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.
Southampton XI (4-1-2-1-2): Forster; Cedric, Fonte, Van Dijk, Bertrand; Romeu; Clasie, Davis; Tadic; Redmond, Rodriguez.
HALF-TIME: ARSENAL 1-1 SOUTHAMPTON
It's been a mixed opening 45 minutes for Arsenal, who started poorly and deservedly went behind before finishing the half on the front foot. Since Koscielny fired them back into the game, the Gunners have looked the better of the two sides, but they've still struggled to get Perez into the game, leaving the Spaniard looking like an isolated figure in front of the Southampton goal.
The two teams are making their way back out on to the pitch ahead of the start of the second half.
FULL-TIME: ARSENAL 2-1 SOUTHAMPTON
The referee blows his whistle for the final time and Arsenal have just about managed to come away with all three points. The Southampton players are absolutely livid at the referee for giving away such a late penalty, especially seeing as Long seemed to be fouled in the build-up. However, the result stands and it's a second defeat of the season for the struggling Saints.
