HOJBJERG DENIED! That could have added further gloss to the scoreline, as the ball is played into the path of the former Bayern Munich man, whose shot from inside the area is right at the keeper.
90' +1
McQueen gets away from Maitland-Niles and flicks the ball into the area for Long, who chests it down beautifully, before teeing up Hojbjerg, who takes too long to make up his mind from a good position.
89'
WONDERFUL SKILL! Sims has been a livewire off the bench, and he gets to the byline with some trickery before pulling it back for McQueen, whose strike is blocked at point-blank range by Maitland-Niles.
87'
SAVED! Sims has a strike from an angle, but the substitute saw his shot around the post, with the slightest of touches from Martinez maybe helping it wide! The resulting corner comes to nothing.
84'
OFF THE LINE! Maitland-Niles hooks a great cross to the back post for Lucas, who flicks it back into the six-yard area. Oxlade-Chamberlain is there to pounce, but Yoshida hacks it away in time!
82'
THAT WAS THE CHANCE! Arsenal finally pass their way through the Saints and Xhaka, who has been one of their rare bright spots, finds Oxlade-Chamberlain in close, but he side-foots it over the top!
80'
Lucas Pérez gets yellow.
Southampton have played a bit of a blinder here. They've defended excellently, taken their chances when presented and are now waiting to pick Arsenal off on the counter-attack in the closing stages.
Hojbjerg is tripped by Lucas, and that's another booking.
78'
ARSENAL ESCAPE! With most of their players camped in the opposition half, Southampton nearly profit on he counter as Long holds off Gabriel before dinking a finish past Martinez, but it's the wrong side of the post!
75'
Arsenal are running out of ideas, and the same thing is happening to the time they have to resurrect themselves. Ramsey lashes a wild volley into a defender, before a deep cross is easily caught by Forster.
73'
Xhaka drives forward with the ball and releases it to Ramsey, but the Welsh midfielder can't keep the momentum of his stride going and as a result, over-steps the ball and bundles his effort wide.
Minute
Description
70'
Not a whole lot going down on the pitch. Arsenal are being frustrated at every turn, as Southampton, led by the excellent Van Dijk, are organising their defence to restrict them to pot-shots from range.
68'
ANOTHER ONE GOES WIDE! Southampton are quite happy to let Coquelin, who has never scored for Arsenal, keep testing his luck from distance. To be fair, this one wasn't far off either.
66'
J. Sims enters the game and replaces S. Boufal.
Boufal has been swapped out for Joshua Sims.
65'
P. Højbjerg enters the game and replaces H. Reed.
Harrison Reed has exited the game as Hojbjerg makes his appearance.
The raft of substitutions has broken up the momentum of the game, which will suit the visiting side just fine. They've done the hard part, now all they have to do is keep their composure for the final third of the game.
64'
A. Maitland-Niles enters the game and replaces C. Jenkinson.
Carl Jenkinson also heads off as Ainsley Maitland-Niles comes on in his place.
62'
A. Oxlade-Chamberlain enters the game and replaces J. Reine-Adélaïde.
Reine- Adelaide is replaced by Oxlade-Chamberlain.
INTO THE ARMS OF THE KEEPER! The ball is kept alive at the edge of the Southampton area and Xhaka eschews the cries of "Shoot!" from the crowd to pass for COquelin to do just that. However, Forster is all over it.
59'
THAT SHOULD HAVE SEALED IT! Lucas had a chance to break, but a terrible pass from him sets the opposition in motion instead. Boufal strides forward into the area, and drills a low shot that whistles past the post!
57'
Southampton threaten on the break again, as Cuco Martina has the ball on the right flank and has Long streaming forward for it. Had his ball been a foot more accurate, then this tie could have been put to bed.
55'
Xhaka takes aim from the set-piece from around 30 yards. He gets some oomph behind it and it's swerving, but ultimately not enough to trouble Forster, who catches it.
54'
Iwobi links with Ramsey centrally, and continues his run expecting a return pass from the Welshman. However, Yoshida trips him instead, and is lucky that the referee decides to be lenient with him already on a yellow card.
52'
SPILLED! That could have been very embarrassing for Martinez. A long-range effort from Long was on target, but appeared to be in the keeper's hands. However, his parry is weak and thankfully for him, bobbles around the post.
50'
RAMSEY SHOULD HAVE DONE BETTER! The Welshman has been distributing the ball well in this game, but when faced with a virtual one-on-one, he allowed Reed enough time to get back and disrupt his finish.
47'
Arsenal do in one minute what they barely managed in the last 45 - get a shot away in the penalty area. Ramsey intelligently flicks the ball to Lucas, but on the turn, he can't convert it!
46'
We're off again!
45'
Xhaka finds a lovely pass to Coquelin, which provides the midfielder with some space. He gets it ahead fo Reine-Adelaide, but the youngster runs into trouble and is crowded out near the byline.
43'
G. Xhaka enters the game and replaces Mohamed Elneny.
Elneny is no longer fit to continue, and he will be replaced by Xhaka. I would have advocated for the Swiss international's introduction in the second half in any case.
41'
Southampton are in dreamland, and Arsenal have shot themselves in the foot. The Saints have become something of a bogey team for the Gunners in recent games, and the hosts will have a lot to do to turn this around.
38'
R. Bertrand has scored a goal for Southampton! Assist by S. Boufal.
Good work out wide from him.
SOUTHAMPTON HAVE SCORED AGAIN! Jenkinson runs into trouble in his own half, and Davis takes the initiative to burst forward, spraying it wide to Boufal, who passes it infield to Bertrand. The full-back takes a touch before angling a shot into the corner!
37'
The Gunners do have one or two attacking options on the bench if they need to unlock the defence later in the game. Granit Xhaka is capable of doing just that, while Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain has been instrumental as a substitute in recent weeks.
34'
M. Yoshida gets yellow.
Ramsey's flick is a sumptuous one, and it sets Reine-Adelaide on his way. He touches the ball past Maya Yoshida, before colliding hard with the Japanese. The Arsenal fans bay for blood after the two yellows to their players, and the referee books the Saints man.
33'
A. Iwobi gets yellow.
Iwobi is the next player to enter the book, tugging back Boufal's shirt to halt a Southampton break.
32'
Over a third of the game gone now and despite Arsenal's monopolisation of the ball, Forster has yet to be tested. No real penetration from the home side in this game. Frustrating overall.
29'
Mohamed Elneny gets yellow.
Bertrand does Elneny cleanly for pace, but is then bundled to the turf by the Egyptian midfielder. The referee had a long look at that one and eventually reaches into his pocket to fish out the yellow card.
27'
Good back-and-forth tempo developing to the game. Southampton are quite happy to let Arsenal have the ball, and take their chances on the counter. The Gunners have to be careful.
25'
You can tell how the Arsenal players are trained, as their initial instinct is to always look for the pass first, then the shot. It has worked to their detriment when scheming at the top of the box, as it's given the opposition time to get bodies in the way.
23'
This is a strong spell for the home side, as they continue to rob Southampton of the ball in their own half. Reine-Adelaide loses the ball to Steven Davis, but nearly wins it back on the edge of the box.
21'
Aaron Ramsey takes a long ball out of the sky onto his chest beautifully, and almost tees up Lucas for a strike. Arsenal keep it alive, and work it into the path of Carl Jenkinson on the opposite flank, but he flubs the cross and lifts it over the net.
19'
Good, strong move from Arsenal as Iwobi powers through the centre and plays the ball into the feet of Lucas. He gets it back, but takes another touch when he should have shot right away.
17'
Arsenal are dominating the ball but some of their passing in the final third is letting them down. Francis Coquelin and Elneny aren't the most creative distributors, and its showing.
15'
The Arsenal faithful are up in arms after they feel that Fraser Forster handled the ball outside the area when closing down Jeff Reine-Adelaide, but replays show that he timed it well and kept it inside the box.
13'
J. Clasie has scored a goal for Southampton!
JORDY CLASIE SENDS SOUTHAMPTON INTO THE LEAD! Ryan Bertrand instigated that move with a run and low cross from the left that was slammed into a defender. Clasie attacks the rebound and hammers it home!
10'
So much of the visitors' attacking effort will rest on Long working the channels and finding space to really test the Arsenal defence with his pace. There's been one or two glimpses of that already.
8'
Signs that Arsenal aren't quite as comfortable as the opening minutes would have you believe. A turnover from Elneny nearly presents Long with a chance, but his first touch lets him down.
5'
The last three home ties for Arsenal in this competition against Premier League opposition have all ended in defeat. It continues to be one-way traffic in the Southampton half.
3'
It's the home side enjoying all of the ball in the opening exchanges as you would expect. The last time that these sides met in this competition was two years ago, with the Saints knocking out the Gunners.
1'
Off we go.
Hello and welcome to our live coverage of the EFL Cup quarter-final between Arsenal and Southampton at the Emirates. The Gunners haven't lost since the opening day of the season, but face a side that have given them problems recently.
Arsenal needed a 94th-minute Santi Cazorla penalty to overcome Southampton 2-1 in the Premier League meeting between the pair earlier in the season. Before that, a goalless stalemate at the Emirates in February ended a run of two straight Gunners defeats to the Saints.
Arsene Wenger's team are fourth in the Premier League, three points behind leaders Chelsea. They're also through to the knockout stages of the Champions League, with a 4-3 reverse at home to Liverpool in August their only defeat of 2016-17.
A narrow 1-0 win versus Everton last weekend was a much-needed return to form for Southampton, who broke a four-match winless run in the league. On the continent, things are more up to par, as they sit second in Group K of the Europa League with a great chance to qualify.
Arsenal subs: Oxlade-Chamberlain, Xhaka, Bielik, Bola, Macey, Maitland-Niles, Mavididi.
Mohamed Elneny is the only survivor from the Arsenal team that beat Bournemouth over the weekend. Lucas Perez shakes off an ankle knock to get a rare start, while Rob Holding and Emiliano Martinez are also given a run out.
Shane Long and Sofiane Boufal are brought back into the Southampton team by Claude Puel, with Cedric Soares, James Ward-Prowse and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in reserve in what looks like a strong Saints squad.
That will wrap up the first half here at the Emirates, with Southampton holding all the cards with a 2-0 lead. The visitors are firmly in control thanks to strikes from Claise and Bertrand, and the Gunners, who have been toothless in this game, have a mountain to climb to avoid elimination from the EFL Cup.
And that will be that from the Emirates. Southampton qualify for the semi-finals of the EFL Cup at the expense of a sorry Arsenal side, who could have played until sunrise and not scored. Clasie opened the scoring, before another from the superb Bertrand wrapped up progression for the Saints. Only the second defeat of the season for the Gunners. That's all the time we've got, thanks for tuning in!
