Germany are killing valuable time with some patient possession near the halfway line. Australia are pressing hard, but they're struggling to win the ball back. Into the final minute now and it's looking like Germany will see this out barring some incredibly late drama.
90' +1
There will be four minutes added on at the end of this match.
90'
Australia send everyone forward as they win a corner on the end of a tidy attack. Germany clear Mooy's delivery and Werner heads forward on the counter, going the length of the pitch on his own, but he fails to hit the target in the end.
89'
Into the final minute of the 90 now, but there does figure to be a healthy amount of time added on - at least three minutes. Australia have not given up fighting, but Germany are looking threatening on the break as there's plenty of space being afforded to them with Australia committing bodies forward.
87'
T. Cahill enters the game and replaces T. Jurić.
Australia's final change sees Socceroo's hero Tim Cahill enter the fray, at the expense of Juric.
85'
Germany have settled down once again as they enjoy a prominent spell in possession, running precious time off the clock. Fatigue appears to be setting in for Australia, who have battled so hard in this second half to make a game of it. There's still time left for another twist in the tale, but the Socceroos will have to dig deep.
83'
STAT: Australia are unbeaten in their last 12 competitive matches, excluding friendlies (W8 D4).
81'
VITAL FROM LENO! The keeper is coming up big after a couple of blunders to preserve Germany's lead! Here he sprints off his line and out of the box in a flash to get to a long ball over the top ahead of Juric, just managing to clear the danger as Germany's defence had been breached!
79'
NEARLY THE EQUALISER! Terrific hold-up play from Juric as he brings down a long ball over the top and shields off a defender, before squaring for Mooy, but the midfielder's effort is collected smartly by Leno, who was in need of a bit of confidence!

Description
78'
E. Can enters the game and replaces L. Stindl.
A final German change here sees Emre Can replace Stindl. Germany clearly a bit wary as they load up on defensive support to try and see this one out.
75'
THAT WOULD HAVE SEALED IT! Werner comes inches away from his first international goal as he twists and turns in the area, before beating Ryan with a clever effort towards the near post, but his strike rattles off the woodwork!
73'
STAT: Germany are unbeaten in their last 10 matches, dating back to a 2-0 defeat to France in the Euro 2016 semi-finals (W8 D2).
71'
J. Troisi enters the game and replaces T. Rogić.
A second change for Australia as James Troisi replaces Rogic.
68'
The tempo has fizzled out a bit as Germany tighten things up. Perhaps the inexperience of this German side is starting to show now as they look a bit uncomfortable in their attempts to see this through to full-time.
66'
Australia continue in the ascendency here, as confidence grows in their side with each passing minute. Germany are still enjoying the advantage in possession, but they're not doing much with it now as Australia seem to have shored up their defence.
64'
T. Sainsbury gets yellow.
Sainsbury becomes the first Australian player booked in the match.
63'
N. Süle enters the game and replaces J. Brandt.
Niklas Sule comes on for some defensive support, replacing Brandt.
61'
STAT: Germany scored 15 goals in five matches in their most recent Confederations Cup appearance in 2005.
59'
Well we absolutely have a game on our hands now. The how of it isn't exactly certain, as Germany should have probably put this to bed ages ago, but Australia refuse to die off. They're showing great fight as they are within striking distance again as we approach the hour mark.
57'
T. Werner enters the game and replaces S. Wagner.
Germany's first change sees RB Leipzig's Timo Werner replace Wagner.
56'
T. Jurić has scored a goal for Australia!
GAME ON ONCE AGAIN! Another head in the hands moment for Leno who spills Rogic's tame strike from the top of the box, after Mooy's free-kick was sent straight into the wall, and the rebound is sent straight into the feet of Juric who slots home with ease! It goes to video review to confirm it didn't strike the arm of an Aussie player on its way through, and the call stands!
55'
L. Goretzka gets yellow.
Goretzka fouls Rogic right atop the box and he becomes the first player booked in the match. This is a real chance for Australia to threaten from the free-kick.
54'
Outstanding running from Draxler to kick-start another Germany attack, but Australia do better this time around to commit bodies back in defence and snuff it out. They have to channel that intensity at the other end, now, to get back on the scoresheet and make this a game.
52'
STAT: Australia are unbeaten in their last two matches against Germany, both friendlies played in Germany (W1 D1).
50'
This is turning out to be a replicate of the match played between these two sides in the 2005 Confederations Cup, which ended 4-3 in favour of Germany. Goals are once again not in short supply as the chances keep coming here in Sochi. Four and counting as we pass the 50-minute mark.
48'
L. Goretzka has scored a goal for Germany! Assist by J. Kimmich.
Kimmich has been having his way on the right and he picks up an assist here, at long last.
GERMANY DOUBLE THEIR ADVANTAGE! Australia's quick start is short-lived as Germany put a stranglehold on the match! Goretzka times his run to perfection as he gets on the end of a clever ball in from the right, and he finishes brilliantly at the near post! It's a goal he deserves for how well he's played in this match.
47'
Almost a dream start! Encouraging signs for Australia as Kruse makes his presence felt straight away, latching onto the end of a tidy throughball, but Leno comes out to deny him. It all turns out to be for nothing in the end, however, as the offside flag is raised.
46'
R. Kruse enters the game and replaces M. Luongo.
Australia make one change at the break as Robbie Kruse replaces Luongo.
Back underway in the second half!
45' +1
HALF-TIME: AUSTRALIA 1-2 GERMANY.
45'
There will be one minute added on at the end of the first half.
44'
Penalty goal scored by J. Draxler for Germany!
SLOTTED HOME WITH CONFIDENCE! No mistake from Draxler, who coolly rolls his penalty home to restore Germany's lead, sending Ryan the wrong way.
43'
PENALTY TO GERMANY! Just like that, Germany have the chance to restore their lead before the interval! Australia are the architects of their own downfall! They're handed a lifeline, but they give it right back as the referee points to the spot after Goretzka does so well to win a penalty after a foul from Luongo.
41'
T. Rogić has scored a goal for Australia!
UNBELIEVABLE! AUSTRALIA ARE ON LEVEL TERMS! Rogic's strike is heading comically wide, but it's blocked right back into his path for a second effort. This one he strikes better, but it still should be saved, somehow sneaking under the arms of Leno! As undeserved as it gets, but they will take it!
39'
SOMEHOW IT STAYS OUT! Again Germany attack down that right flank, where they have had continued success. Kimmich springs Stindl, who flashes a delivery across the face of goal. Leckie slides in to get a touch, no more than a couple yards off the line, and somehow sends it over the bar and behind for a corner!
37'
FIRST CHANCE AUSTRALIA! That's the danger of Germany not scoring a second! For all their dominance thus far, Australia nearly come out of it level as Sainsbury latches onto the end of a free-kick, but sends a header wide of the near post! That was a get-out-of-jail-free card that he absolutely had to take!
35'
Australia have to dig deep and find a way back into this game. They have to adjust their approach, however, if they are to start troubling Germany. They need to show a greater desire to press the Germans in possession, and their work rate has to increase. They simply haven't seemed to possess the necessary desire to win in this first half.
33'
Just too much for Brandt! Terrific interplay from Germany as they go from back foot to front in a flash. Draxler plays through Brandt on the end of it, and the winger's eyes light up as he has just the keeper to beat, but he lets the ball run away from him as his composure lets him down at the vital moment!
31'
Germany continue their pursuit of the second goal they deserve. Despite thoroughly dominating the opening half-hour, Australia are still very much in the game at just 1-0 down. Germany remain in control, but they would love to get that insurance marker before the interval.
29'
STAT: Australia have won just one of their last 13 matches against UEFA opposition, a 1-0 friendly victory over Greece in June 2016 (D2 L10).
27'
IMPORTANT INTERVENTION! Decisive, swift and clinical from Germany in attack! They continue to carve apart this Aussie defence. Another tidy passing move comes to Hector, but his low cross it put behind smartly by Sainsbury. The ensuing corner is played in for Brandt, but his effort from the top of the box is parried excellently by Ryan!
25'
Complete and utter domination from Germany would be the only way to describe these opening 25 minutes. It has been one-way traffic in Sochi, as this supposedly weakened Germany side has not appeared in the slightest to be missing any of their regulars. It's a showcase of the depth they have in the ranks.
23'
SHOULD BE TWO! Wagner continues to knock on the door, but he's been unable to find the back of the net! Here he latches onto a delicious throughball from Draxler as the offside flag stays down. He has just the keeper to beat, but drags his effort wide of the far post!
21'
Kimmich and Brandt have enjoyed their time on the right flank, getting after Behich with great consistency. The latter is sprung into space again, with the full-back caught out, but his effort is parried excellently at the near post by Ryan!
19'
STAT: Germany have won both of their competitive matches against Australia, 4-0 in the 2010 World Cup and 4-3 in the 2005 Confederations Cup.
17'
INCHES WIDE! Wagner nearly doubles Germany's lead as he dives to get on the end of a cleverly floated cross in from the right, after Goretzka did so well to elude his marker and play in the delivery, but the striker's effort bounces agonisingly wide of the far post!
15'
Germany win a free-kick in an advanced position on the left, and the delivery into the area is strong. Goretzka gets behind his marker and rises high to meet it, but gets the contact all wrong in the end as his header sails over the bar.
13'
Mooy and Milligan finally show a bit of fight in midfield as they win the ball back and threaten to start Australia forward in attack, but their transition game is lacking as they struggle to get onto the front foot. It all has to be a bit quicker from Australia. There's no intent or urgency to their play at the moment.
11'
Possession has been a scarcity for Australia, who continue to come under pressure from this clinical German attack. Leckie does well to track back at an important time, safely ushering the ball back to his keeper after a dangerous cross in from the right threatened to find its way through to Hector.
9'
All Germany in these opening 10 minutes, up a goal and in complete control of the match as they look to add to their lead. Australia have really got off to a slow start, struggling to get their legs under them, and they have been dearly punished for it.
7'
STAT: In 13 all-time Confederations Cup matches, Australia have won just five (D1 L7).
5'
L. Stindl has scored a goal for Germany! Assist by J. Brandt.
GERMANY AHEAD INSIDE FIVE MINUTES! Stindl pulls up his run brilliantly to get on the end of Brandt's pull-back, on the end of a strong run from the winger, and he smashes home a smart first-time finish for his first international goal! What a time to score it!
Lovely running and a terrific spot from Brandt who provides a delightful assist.
3'
Plenty of possession for Germany in the opening minutes, and it's all very threatening from them as well. A ball over the top is chased down by Wagner, who goes down in the area with a decent shout for a penalty, but the referee waves play on.
1'
AND THEY'RE OFF! Germany in white, attacking right to left, with Australia in yellow.
Hello and welcome to live coverage from the Fisht Olympic Stadium in Sochi as Australia and Germany get their Confederations Cup campaigns underway!
Both nations are making their first Confederations Cup appearance since 2005, where they also opened up their tournaments against each other – Germany coming out on top in a seven-goal thriller, with Michael Ballack and Lukas Podolski’s second-half goals securing a 4-3 win in Frankfurt.
Germany went on to finish third, while Australia ended the group stage pointless. The Socceroos had missed out on all seven World Cups leading up to that tournament, but have reached the grand stage on each of the last three occasions, as their pedigree in world football continues to rise.
Germany’s resume speaks for itself. Since that meeting in 2005, they have reached six successive World Cup and Euro Cup semi-finals, culminating in their fourth World Cup triumph in 2014 in Brazil – defeating Argentina in the final to secure their place in the Confederations Cup.
Joachim Low has brought an experimental side with him to Russia as he looks to showcase their depth and aid in the selection process for next summer’s World Cup squad, while Ange Postecoglou’s 23-man squad selection came with very few surprises.
Brighton's first summer signing Mathew Ryan mans the goal for Australia, protected by a three-man backline, with Trent Sainsbury joined by Bailey Wright and Milos Degenek. New Huddersfield recruit Aaron Mooy is partnered in midfield by the experienced Mark Milligan, with Hertha's Mathew Leckie and Bursaspor's Aziz Behich on the flanks.
Luzern's Tomi Juric leads the line, flanked by star Celtic-man Tom Rogic and QPR's Massimo Luongo. Leading scorer Tim Cahill is relegated to a role as a substitute.
Few surprises in Joachim Low's side. Despite taking a youthful side with him to Russia, experience is still opted for at the back, as Bayern's Joshua Kimmich and Koln's Jonas Hector are joined by Arsenal's Shkodran Mustafi and Roma's Antonio Rudiger. Sebastian Rudy and Leon Goretzka offer the protection ahead of them.
Up top it's Sandro Wagner and Lars Stindl who form a partnership. Both players are making just their third appearances for the national side, but they will be accompanied by a bit of experience in the form of PSG's Julian Draxler, with Leverkusen's Julian Brandt also offering support.
Lars Stindl handed Germany the lead inside of five minutes, setting the tone for what would be a one-sided first half in Sochi. Die Mannschaft were in complete control and unlucky not to be further ahead when Tom Rogic was gifted an undeserved equaliser for Australia - but it didn't last long. Angry and eager to restore their lead, Germany got forward straight away and found their second, Julian Draxler slotting home from the spot after Leon Goretzka won them a penalty, and that's where we stand at the interval.
That's all for our live coverage, thanks for following along. Goodbye!
The World Champions open their Confederations Cup campaign with three points with Lars Stindl, Julian Draxler and Leon Goretzka getting on the scoresheet, as they fend off a strong second-half push from Australia, who cut the deficit to one through Tomi Juric, but just could not find the equaliser in the end. Up next for Australia is a date with Cameroon, while Germany will face Chile with both sides looking to book their place in the next round.
