A late free-kick in a promising position for Hungary. Up come Kadar, Guzmics and Gulacsi...
SAVE! Fiola's diving header looks as though it might be headed for the back of the net, but Rui Patricio saves. He bowls the ball out to Quaresma, who takes aim for the unguarded goal. From 60 yards, he misses.
90' +1
There are three minutes to be added here. Despite the one-goal margin, this game appears to have been over for a long time. A draw is not good enough for Hungary, remember.
89'
A. Fiola gets yellow.
Cristiano Ronaldo gets yellow.
YELLOW! Another Hungary player who will miss their next qualifier, Fiola goes into the book as he clashes with Ronaldo off-the-ball while Gulacsi claims Eliseu's cross.
YELLOW! And Ronaldo is punished, too. Cautions for the pair.
88'
Nice play on the Portugal right and Cedric can play a pass through for Quaresma. The substitute is looking the other way, though, and the chance is gone.
87'
Play restarts with a Portugal corner, after a deflected long ball, and Dzsudzsak deals with the situation by winning another free-kick. He does not react, on this occasion.
86'
Ricardo Quaresma enters the game and replaces André Silva.
SUB! A well-earned rest for goalscorer Andre Silva as Ricardo Quaresma comes on.
83'
BLOCK! Ronaldo so nearly has his goal! Fiola does brilliantly to slide in and divert a fearsome shot away. The subsequent corner comes to nothing.
82'
B. Dzsudzsák gets yellow.
YELLOW! Dzsudzsak really has not enjoyed himself today. He finally wins a free-kick and then sarcastically applauds the referee. That brings a booking and he's now banned for October's trip to Switzerland. As things stand, Hungary will have nothing left to play for in that game. Small mercies.
81'
Portugal are so desperate to create openings for Ronaldo, presumably hoping to avoid his glare. Joao Mario passes when he should shoot and the chance is gone.
Minute
Description
80'
Dzsudzsak's header from a right-wing cross struggles to reach the goal line. That's about as good as it has got for Hungary and their skipper in the last half an hour.
79'
SAVE! So nearly a clinching goal on the counter! Dzsudzsak again does not win a free-kick as he goes down and Portugal break. Joao Mario centres towards Ronaldo and a recovering defender intervenes, Gulacsi reacting well to cut out a goal-bound prod.
78'
R. Varga enters the game and replaces G. Lovrencsics.
SUB! Lovrenczics, after a momentous effort, makes way for Roland Varga.
77'
It is Hungary's turn to have a full back down, Korhut taking a kick from Cedric. Play restarts with a Portugal corner but they go short again and it comes to nothing. It is a tactic that led to the only goal, but the visitors have wasted so many promising set-pieces.
75'
The game is just dying out slightly now. Hungary lack the manpower and firepower to force an equaliser - Rui Patricio, extremely underworked, taking the latest cross - and Portugal look to be relatively happy with the current margin of victory.
72'
An extended Portugal move - spanning dozens of passes - concludes with Eliseu failing to turn a pass inside to Andre Silva in the box. Ronaldo, as expected, looks a little peeved.
70'
Dzsudzsak cannot believe the decisions going against him here. Danilo clips his own heels and goes down, somehow winning a free-kick.
69'
Still no goal for Ronaldo. Danilo has time and space to pick him out with a cross but puts too much purchase on his centre and the ball flies over Ronaldo's head.
67'
Á. Pintér enters the game and replaces Á. Elek.
SUB! Adam Pinter is on for Hungary, with Elek, on a booking, making way.
Some rare excitement for the home supporters! Dzsudzsak crosses well and Eliseu has to be alert to nod clear, before the Al-Wahda winger thumps a shot into a nearby defender. Dzsudzsak finally crosses again but Bode flicks the ball away from a team-mate.
66'
Bernardo Silva simply carries on from where Gelson Martins left off. Dashing inside, he trades passes and then comes the cross. It's deep and comfortable for Gulacsi.
65'
Lovrencsics does really well to halt Eliseu but then finds the Portugal man hunting him down as he runs clear. This is thankless work for Hungary.
63'
Bernardo Silva enters the game and replaces Gelson Martins.
Yet more frustration for Hungary. Danilo takes down Elek in the middle of the pitch, fairly cynically, and yet there's no booking.
SUB! Bernardo Silva enters in place of the impressive Gelson Martins.
61'
D. Böde enters the game and replaces M. Eppel.
SUB! Daniel Bode is on for Eppel as Hungary change up their now sole striker.
60'
Makkelie's display is not getting any better, in the eyes of the hosts. Dzsudzsak hits the deck under pressure from Cedric and no foul is given. A Portugal corner at the other end then goes short again but Hungary clear.
58'
Ronaldo is a little frustrated by his team-mates' continued failure to create chances for their captain. Currently hovering on the shoulder of the last defender, he is waiting to pounce.
56'
Portugal are playing some silky stuff now, boosted by both a man advantage and a goal. Gelson Martins is everywhere, pulling of flicks and tricks to move play on.
55'
And Ronaldo again tries to shoot on his left, cannoning a strike out for a corner. The kick falls for Cedric, but he blazes over.
52'
Ronaldo has scored in each of his prior qualifiers in this campaign and he will be determined to extend that run now. He almost finds room for a left-footed shot on the edge of the area, but Hungary snap back into position to harry away.
50'
CHANCE! So close to an instant equaliser! A cross bounces up off Eppel for Patkai to volley and he drags his effort just wide.
48'
André Silva has scored a goal for Portugal! Assist by Cristiano Ronaldo.
Corner! Nice build-up play by Portugal to create space for Moutinho's cross, but Fiola coolly volleys behind.
Ronaldo's dinked cross, as he rapidly ran out of pitch, was sublime. Falling just beneath the crossbar, Andre Silva could not miss.
GOAL! Andre Silva has the visitors in front! Portugal looked to be losing momentum after a short corner but worked the ball through brilliantly for Ronaldo to cross and his strike partner chests into the net. 0-1.
47'
Hungary are packed inside their own third. Gelson Martins shimmies this way and that to cross, twice in succession, but the home side recover well.
46'
KICK-OFF: We're back under way in Hungary. Portugal, who have just been greeted by a mass of boos, get us restarted.
45' +4
HALF-TIME: Hungary 0-0 Portugal.
45' +3
SAVE! Ronaldo's free-kick, from a great position, hits the wall. He then shoots again from a similar area and Gulacsi claims.
45' +2
Á. Elek gets yellow.
YELLOW! Referee Danny Makkelie draws further ire from the home supporters and players as he books Elek for a swipe at Joao Mario.
45' +1
There are to be three minutes of stoppage time. Hungary need to be a little careful. After packing the defence minutes earlier, they pushed on and left the space for that last Portugal attack.
45'
SAVE! Oh, this really should be the opener! The ball breaks for Ronaldo in the box, he touches it on to Joao Mario who, in turn, finds Andre Silva completely unmarked. The AC Milan forward takes his time and shoots straight at Gulacsi. A big, big chance.
44'
High and wide from Eliseu, to Ronaldo's frustration, as another Portugal attack peters out. Hungary will look to regroup at half-time.
43'
Dzsudzsak does really well to carry the ball forward down the left and relieve some pressure on the Hungary defence. The play soon heads back up the other end, though...
42'
Joao Mario gets to the byline, but he is crowded out and fires a cross harmlessly behind. Storck will be pleased with the way this is going, barring Priskin's moment of stupidity.
41'
The red card has not worked in Portugal's favour so far. They had been on top and were enjoying space in the Hungary half, but the game is now compact and those same gaps have been filled by a more conservative home approach.
39'
It is Fiola's turn to thunder in on Eliseu. He gets the ball, but the Portugal substitute is getting quite a raw deal as he takes the rough treatment of the aggrieved home players.
38'
Eppel is slightly fortunate as he heads straight up in the air from a Portugal corner, won wide on the left, and Gulacsi is underneath the dropping ball to catch.
37'
CHANCE! Or maybe not? Lovrencsics darts onto a pass inside the area, spins away from Eliseu and fires over. A poor effort in the end, but an opening at least.
More full back problems for Portugal. Cedric is receiving treatment now, he appears to have taken a whack from Dzsudzsak and has a bloody nose.
36'
More cheers as Mihaly Korhut nutmegs Ronaldo. Hungary just need to settle down a little now.
35'
Lovrencsics is a popular man in Budapest right now. The Ferencvaros man flies from tackle to tackle on his flank. When Portugal eventually cross, the ball is poor and runs behind.
33'
And now, predictably, there are more jeers for Pepe as he returns to the action, his head patched up.
It's one of those games now. Regardless of the validity of the red card, Hungary's home support have taken this as an us-against-the-world scenario. Lovrencsics' crunching challenge on Eliseu brings a hearty roar.
31'
The Hungary fans are furious as Pepe makes his way to the touchline after treatment, but Priskin has no defence. The Portugal man looks to have got under his skin and the hosts have paid the penalty. Santos' side will fancy their chances now...
30'
T. Priskin goes off after a red card!
RED! Priskin is off! What is the Ferencvaros forward thinking? He blatantly elbows Pepe as they vie for a long ball and then, as if that was not enough, appears to step on the grounded defender.
29'
Eliseu's first contribution is a dribble inside, but he is soon halted and Hungary look to attack. The game is a little scrappy at the moment.
28'
Eliseu enters the game and replaces Fábio Coentrão.
SUB! Here comes Eliseu. Fabio Coentrao's game is over.
27'
Fabio Coentrao has called play to a stop as he receives treatment on the pitch. He looks to be clutching his thigh and Eliseu, who started against the Faroe Islands, is being readied.
26'
Gulacsi claims from the second phase of play and launches a counter. Dzsudszak and Cedric are under the high ball, the former winning a foul from the latter. The free-kick delivery is poor.
25'
Corner to Portugal! Cedric crosses, Moutinho slides in and fails to make contact, before Andre Silva's effort thumps off a defender and behind.
23'
Joao Mario has looked good so far. Interchanging with Ronaldo on the left, his nippy dribbles have caused problems. On this occasion, though, a crowd of defenders tie him up in knots.
22'
Another important block from Guzmics! Ronaldo cuts inside and beats three men before lining up a shot, but the Yanbian Funde defender is there.
CHANCE! More fine play from the visitors! Andre Silva, running onto Moutinho's blocked shot, goes down under Gulacsi's challenge but picks himself up to tee up Cedric. The Southampton full back should hit the target from inside the area. Instead, he blazes high into the stands.
21'
Wild from Danilo! He takes up possession 25 yards from goal and has Ronaldo free ahead of him but instead shoots, spectacularly missing the target.
20'
M. Pátkai gets yellow.
YELLOW! Mate Patkai is furious. He backs into Moutinho, who goes down dramatically. Yellow for the Videoton midfielder.
18'
It is now Portugal who look a little sloppy at the back, though. A couple of stray passes have invited pressure and the home crowd roar Hungary on every time they come forward.
17'
The home captain shows his own dribbling skills but Dzsudszak, after darting inside, shoots tamely at Pepe. The Besiktas defender runs clear and picks up a foul.
16'
Ronaldo may now prefer a central striking role but he continues to drift out to the left here. It is troubling Hungary, who have not been watching the Real Madrid man as carefully as they should.
15'
Hungary's best moments so far have come from set-pieces and they again manage an effort here. Bruno Alves fouls Priskin, Dzsudzsak delivers and Elek's header trickles wide.
14'
Gelson Martins makes good progress down the right and then plays through Moutinho - a metronomic presence so far - to pick out Cedric Soares on the overlap. The full back's cross is poor and claimed by Gulacsi, however.
13'
Hungary's decision-making in their rare forward forays has been poor, giving possession back to Portugal. Santos' men are looking for Ronaldo at every opportunity.
12'
And now some frustration for Ronaldo. He picks the ball up on the left but the flag goes up against him for offside. The visiting captain seethes, certain he was in line, and the Hungary supporters love it.
11'
Yet another nervy moment for Hungary, with a short back pass inviting pressure from Joao Mario. Gulacsi is first there, but the Inter man might have caught the ball given another couple of yards.
9'
Portugal are just starting to turn the screw. Andre Silva bursts forward and slips in Ronaldo, but Hungary scramble clear after consecutive balls into the box.
8'
And again! The ball breaks for Joao Mario, who shoots left-footed and the effort cannons behind via the advancing Tamas Kadar.
CLOSE! The corner goes short this time and another delivery finds Ronaldo. A difficult header almost finds the bottom-right corner.
7'
Another corner! Nice play from Portugal, through Joao Mario, Moutinho and Fabio Coentrao, resulting in a cross that is nodded away from Ronaldo.
6'
SAVE! Ronaldo, taking up a deep position, lets fly from wide on the left and Peter Gulacsi saves well with a parry over the top. The corner is cleared.
5'
And now a vital block at the other end! Joao Mario teases a pass in to Fabio Coentrao, whose low effort is blocked by Guzmics.
4'
A half-chance, Richard Guzmics meets the corner but, under pressure, tamely nods a long way wide.
3'
There's a foul on Priskin this time and Hungary send the big men forward from the back. Danilo slices the delivery behind for a corner...
2'
A pair of early free-kicks go Portugal's way after fouls on Danilo and Ronaldo, allowing the visitors - in their change strip - to build a first attack. It comes to nothing.
1'
KICK-OFF: A mural, made up of Hungarian colours, fades in the stands as the hosts get us started.
Hello and welcome to our live text commentary of the World Cup qualifier between Hungary and Portugal in Budapest.
European champions Portugal need just a draw today to seal a top-two spot in Group B, but they will surely be targeting all three points in order to remain hot on the heels of pool leaders Switzerland.
Both Hungary and Portugal were winners on Thursday - against Latvia and the Faroe Islands, respectively - and a home triumph today would see Bernd Storck's third-placed side pull back within five points of the visitors with two games remaining.
Cristiano Ronaldo, fresh from scoring a hat-trick in the victory last week, will look to prevent that from happening. He leads the line for Portugal, but let's get the rest of the team news...
Portugal (4-4-2): Rui Patricio, Cedric Soares, Bruno Alves, Pepe, Fabio Coentrao, Gelson Martins, Danilo Pereira, Moutinho, Joao Mario, Andre Silva, Ronaldo.
Subs: Stieber, Pinter, Bode, Markvart, Hangya, Roland Varga, Adam Nagy, Megyeri, Kovacsik, Daniel Nagy.
Subs: Ricardo Pereira, Jose Fonte, Bernardo Silva, Bruno Varela, William Carvalho, Andre Gomes, Bruno Fernandes, Nelson Oliveira, Eliseu, Ricardo Quaresma, Beto, Adrien Silva.
Storck makes five changes, bringing in Attila Fiola, Gergo Lovrencsics, Akos Elek, Tamas Priskin and Marton Eppel. Barnabas Bese is suspended.
Fernando Santos goes with four changes. Bruno Alves, Fabio Coentrao, Gelson Martins and Danilo Pereira come in.
Ronaldo and Andre Silva make up a devastating front line formed for this campaign and they account for 20 of Portugal's 27 goals. Ronaldo has 14, the most of any European player in qualification for the 2018 tournament and level with all-time record-holder Predrag Mijatovic's 1998 tally.
In fact, Ronaldo scored twice and Andre Silva netted the other in the sides' last meeting in March. Hungary have never beaten Portugal, although they led three times in a thrilling 3-3 draw at Euro 2016.
The players are gathering in the tunnel at the Groupama Arena...
There has been an awful lot of blood and thunder in this clash so far. Portugal have been the better side and Hungary are down to 10 men - after Priskin's foolish red - but the game remains all square.
And now the two captains - the two number sevens - Balazs Dzsudszak and Ronaldo lead the players out. We will shortly, after the anthems, be under way.
Hungary have no business in Russia next year. They will not be at the 2018 World Cup. Portugal, by contrast, are edging towards a play-off place while top spot remains a hope, despite a comfortable win for Switzerland in Latvia today.
That's all from Budapest. Thanks for joining us and, until next time, goodbye!
Andre Silva's goal proved the difference after Priskin's first-half red card. Hungary worked hard to stay in the game - and Dzsudzsak is leading the applause in front of the fans - but they came up short.
