C. Smalling enters the game and replaces M. Darmian.

K. Smith has scored a goal for Bristol City! Assist by M. Taylor.
It was a wonderfully-worked move from City - substitute Taylor finding enough space to dink the ball through to Smith, who made no mistake with the finish.
GOOOOOOOAAAAAALLLLLLL!!!! CITY HAVE WON IT IN THE FINAL MINIUTE!!!! What an incredible conclusion at Ashton Gate as - with just 30 seconds left - Smith has hammered home at the culmination of another fantastic move.
89'
M. Taylor gets yellow.
P. Pogba gets yellow.
For his part in that, Taylor also picks up a booking.
A tussle between Pogba and Taylor sees the United man go into the book.
88'
A real chance now for City, as Lukaku gives away a free-kick. However, the hosts can’t make anything of it, as United manage to get it clear.
85'
Great stop! Brilliant goalkeeping from Steele, who pulls of an instinctive save to tip Lukaku’s low strike wide. Moments earlier, Rashford had been close to tucking home a cross from the left.
84'
Chances at both ends! First, Romero has to hook a cross-cum-shot over his crossbar before Rashford goes close with a long-range strike.
82'
A well-worked United move results in Lukkau threading a neat pass into Pogba. However, the midfielder’s touch is a heavy one, and Steele rushes off his line to smother the ball.
80'
City have played superbly, but their midfielders are now looking noticeably leggy. It is not stopping them defending in disciplined fashion, but Reid is becoming more isolated up top.
79'
Just over 10 minutes remaining at Ashton Gate, and this game is certainly in the balance. As I write, Patterson cuts onto his right foot and gets a curling strike off, but it whistles just over.
Minute
Description
76'
More neat and tidy build-up play from United sees Lukaku tee up Mkhitaryan. The substitute tries his luck from the edge of the area, but his goal-bound shot is well blocked.
75'
CLOSE! Lukaku gets the better of Steele this time, but his effort merely glances the side-netting.
74'
N. Eliasson enters the game and replaces J. Brownhill.
M. Rashford gets yellow.
Another substitution from the home side sees Brownhill make way for Eliasson.
Superb defending from Bryan, who charges over to prevent Rashford getting through on goal. United’s striker reacts by getting his own back, although he completely misses the ball and ends up in Mike Dean’s book.
72'
SAVE! A first sighting of goal for Lukaku and he makes sure to force Steele into action - the former Barnsley goalkeeper getting down to his left to parry away the Belgian’s drilled strike.
69'
M. Taylor enters the game and replaces H. Magnússon.
H. Mkhitaryan enters the game and replaces Z. Ibrahimović.
First, United make their second change. On comes Mkhitaryan, who has been out in the cold as of late. He replaces Ibrahimovic, who has marked his first start of the season with a fine goal.
City also make a change, with Magnusson going off and Taylor coming on. Bryan is likely to revert to left-back, with Taylor ahead of him. Brownhill, meanwhile, seems fit to carry on.
68'
A worry here for City, with Brownhill having seemingly picked up an injury while stretching to keep the ball in play. That pause will allow some substitutions to take place...
67'
CLOSE! A long throw from Magnusson catches Romero in no man’s land. Flint rises to win the header but, with United’s goalkeeper well off his line, can’t direct it into an open goal.
65'
Unconvincing defensive play from United, as first Ibrahimovic and then Romero make sloppy mistakes - resulting in a throw-in for City deep in the visitors’ half.
63'
City must now look to keep United out for the next few minutes and work their way back into this game, with the visitors looking menacing. The hosts have certainly proved they have the quality to open United up when the opportunity comes.
61'
R. Lukaku enters the game and replaces D. Blind.
That goal isn’t enough for Mourinho to sit back, however. Blind - who made a goal-saving challenge at the end of the first half - is off, and Lukaku is on to partner Ibrahimovic up top.
60'
He’s looked a threat all evening and, finally, Ibrahimovic - on his first start since January - finally gets on the scoresheet and up and running for the campaign.
58'
Z. Ibrahimović has scored a goal for Manchester United!
GOOOOAALLL!! IBRAHIMOVIC LEVELS IT! Well, that lead didn’t last long, as Mike Dean’s rather soft decision to award the free-kick costs City. Ibrahimovic stepped up to slam a low strike through City’s poor wall, and the ball took a nasty bobble before finding the bottom-right corner, giving Steele little chance.
57'
Pogba strides forward from midfield before going down under Smith’s challenge. In all truth, United’s man is very lucky to have won a free-kick there, with Mike Dean somewhat conned into that. Nevertheless, it’s a chance for the visitors…
56'
CHANCE! Again, another well-worked City move sees Bryan find space on the left side of United’s area. This time, though, his strike lacks the power to beat Romero.
54'
United have been knocked out in three of their last six League Cup ties against sides from a lower division, and they will now have to forge a comeback to stay in it this time around!
51'
J. Bryan has scored a goal for Bristol City! Assist by M. Pack.
WHAT A GOAL! CITY TAKE THE LEAD AT ASHTON GATE! Incredible stuff in Bristol as, at the end of a brilliant run, Bryan thumps a venomous effort across Romero and into the top corner!WHAT A GOAL! CITY TAKE THE LEAD AT ASHTON GATE! Incredible stuff in Bristol as, at the end of a brilliant run, Bryan thumps a venomous effort across Romero and into the top corner!
A left-back by trade, Bryan has just carved open United there in remarkable fashion. He started the move with a neat pass to Magnusson, continuing his run as the ball was worked into Pack. The midfielder slipped a neat ball through United’s defence and Bryan - who had halted his run in order to stay onside - duly rounded it all off with a fantastic finish.
49'
SAVE! That’s a superb reaction stop from Steele, who gets across sharply to keep out Rashford’s flick.
47'
J. Paterson gets yellow.
Paterson goes into the book for a foul on Martial, with United handed a free-kick deep in City's half...
46'
We're back underway at Ashton Gate. No changes for either side at the interval.
42'
WHAT A TACKLE! Immense defending from Blind, who somehow gets back to deny Smith what appeared a certain goal with a brilliant last-ditch challenge, with United’s defence having been carved open by sharp City combination play.
40'
WIDE! A chance for Ibrahimovic, who find space at the back post to unleash a volley. Brownhill, however, made a good covering run to put the veteran forward under some pressure.
38'
Though United have had the best chances, City have been very impressive so far, and have certainly troubled Mourinho’s men. As I type, Pogba sets Ibrahimovic away, but Magnusson is back to block the Swede’s effort.
36'
Great defending from Shaw, who utilises his turn of pace to prevent Brownhill getting through down the right.
34'
STAT - City are the highest scoring team in this season’s League Cup so far, with 14 goals in four games.
31'
CLOSE! Magnusson beats Rashford to a loose ball and proceeds to thump a strike goal wards with the ball having sat up nicely. Romero, though, is equal to it.
30'
Rashford is picked out by Pogba’s looping pass and forces Steele into a save. The striker had appeared to beat City’s offside trap, but the linesman’s flag eventually goes up, so it wouldn’t have counted anyway.
28'
Bristol City are the first side from a lower division to eliminate three top-flight clubs in a singleLeague Cup campaign since Bradford City in 2012-13. And Johnson’s side are certainly putting in a good display at Ashton Gate. As I type, Flint puts the ball in the net, but the defender had clearly fouled Romero before doing so.
25'
Pogba is allowed far too much room as he drives through City’s midfield before getting a shot away, but it curls wide. Moments later, Rashford goes down after a slight collision with Magnusson, but it was not enough to warrant a penalty.
23'
Despite United's chances, City are not looking to tighten things up, and keep on launching the attacks. Magnusson gets down the line and attempts a cut-back, but Rojo is well-placed to deal with it.
21'
CLOSE! United have rattled the woodwork for a second time. This time it was Rashford, whose low effort clattered off the right-hand upright, with Steele well beat.
20'
Brown steps up to take the free-kick that he won, but can’t keep his effort down.
19'
More pressure from City! First, Blind is forced to clear a header from Flint off the line, with Reid lingering. The hosts keep up the attack though, and Brown wins a free-kick on the edge of the area.
17'
Another half-chance for United, as Martial faces up his marker before skipping inside and unleashing a low strike that is blocked. The rebound falls to McTominay, whose effort soars well over.
15'
STAT - City have won both of their previous League Cup quarter-final ties, beating Fulham after a replay in 1970-71 and Bradford in 1988-89. And they aren't showing any signs of letting up the pressure on United so far...
12'
CHANCE! Well, the first United opportunity very nearly sees Ibrahimovic open the scoring. The Swede got clear of his marker to get on the end of Pogba’s delicate cross, but his volley deflects away off the crossbar.
11'
Almost! A swift counter from City sees Reid find space after Brown had taken the ball from Blind. The striker has Smith in support, but can’t get his pass right and United clear.
9'
City have started well on top here, and aren’t allowing United any time or space to get into their groove. A slack ball from Flint is latched upon by Rashford, but the England forward can only skew his cross wide.
7'
SAVE! Both Magnusson and Brownhill run up to take the free-kick, but it is the latter who gets the shot off, forcing Romero into a decent stop.
6'
Slack play from Pogba, who is forced into an error by Pack. City’s midfielder robs the Frenchman of possession before spinning towards goal, only to be scythed down by the former Juventus star.
4'
It appears that Mourinho has actually set his side up with a back four, rather than a three as initially suggested. Darmian is at right-back, with Shaw on the opposite flank. Blind is sitting just in front of the defence.
2'
No time wasted from the hosts, who look to get on the front foot as Paterson finds space in the area, only to crowded out by a converging glut of United defenders.
1'
It’s a cracking atmosphere at a packed-to-capacity Ashton Gate, where referee Mike Dean has just got the game underway!
Hello and welcome to our LIVE coverage of Manchester United’s League Cup quarter-final clash against Championship high-flyers Bristol City!
This will be the first ever meeting between these sides in the competition, and first of any kind since a top-flight clash in February 1980.
Manchester United substitutes: Mata, Lukaku, Smalling, Lingard, Herrera, Mkhitaryan, Pereira.
Ibrahimovic is in for Romelu Lukaku, who is benched. The Belgian has returned to form in recent weeks, having scored in the wins over Bournemouth and former club West Brom. Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata and Henrikh Mkhitaryan also feature among the substitutes.
Bobby Reid has netted 11 goals in all competitions for City so far this season, and will lead the visitors’ line tonight. He will be up against a three-man United defence, with Mourinho able to welcome back Paul Pogba in midfield following his return from suspension. Zlatan Ibrahimovic, meanwhile, makes his first start of the season.
Like their more illustrious opponents this evening, Lee Johnson’s City are competing at the top of their league this season, albeit the hosts are eight points shy of Championship leaders Cardiff City having won their last four games.
League Cup holders United, meanwhile, are looking to extend their winning run to three matches in all competitions, and given Jose Mourinho’s side are 11 points off runaway Premier League leaders Manchester City, this competition may well offer their best chance of silverware.
However, United will first have to overcome what is sure to be a challenging encounter against a side who will be hoping to feature in the top flight next term. A win would see the holders joing Manchester City, Arsenal and one of Chelsea or Bournemouth in the semi-finals.
The team news is in from Ashton Gate.
Bristol City substitutes: Fielding, Taylor, Eliasson, Kelly, Vyner, Garita, Lemonheigh-Evans.
Manchester United (4-3-3): Romero; Darmian, Lindelof, Rojo, Shaw; Blind, McTominay, Pogba; Rashford, Ibrahimovic, Martial.
HALF TIME: Bristol City 0 Manchester United 0.
An enthralling first-half at Ashton Gate, where the scores are level. City have been on the front foot from the off, having constantly pressurised United - Blind pulling off a superb challenge to maintain parity.
However, it is United who have had the best chances - both Ibrahimovic and Rashford having struck the woodwork.
FULL TIME! Manchester United are out, as Bristol City claim a famous victory and take their place in the semi-finals of the League Cup!
Unadulterated scenes of joy at Ashton Gate, as the homes fans charge onto the pitch to mob the City players. Lee Johnson has masterminded an amazing victory tonight, and it is nothing less than the Championship side deserve!
Johnson claimed to have bought Jose Mourinho’s favourite wine to share with the United manager at the end of this game, and that will certainly taste all-the-better for the City boss.
City kept going right from the off, constantly putting their visitors on the back foot. Bryan’s superb strike gave them the lead, only for Ibrahimovic to equalise, but resolute defending and some fine saves from Steele gave them the platform for Corey Smith grab the winner.
As for United, a great chance for silverware has now gone begging, and Mourinho will now have to switch his attention to attempting to close the gap between the Red Devils and their rivals Manchester City in the league over the festive period.
Well, that’s all from me for now, with Bristol City having joined Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City in the League Cup semi-finals. Until next time, thank you and goodbye!
