We're off! Milan get us underway, attacking from right to left.
Good evening and welcome to our live text commentary of today’s Europa League last-16 first leg between AC Milan and Arsenal at San Siro.
Things couldn’t be much worse for an under-pressure Arsenal side severely lacking in confidence. A torrid recent run of form has left the Gunners on a four-game losing streak heading into tonight’s huge clash, and with little left to play for this campaign, their season really does hinge on how they do in the Europa League. Questions continue to be asked of long-serving boss Arsene Wenger, who desperately needs to answer them this evening.
Brighton & Hove Albion were the latest side to get the better of Arsenal, and a fifth consecutive defeat tonight would see the club’s losing streak extend to five games - something that hasn’t happened for 41 years. The north London side have only lost once away from home in the Europa League this campaign, but this evening’s clash against a dangerously in-form opponent is set to be the most difficult of the lot.
In stark contrast to their opponents, Milan are flying under Gennaro Gattuso. The former midfield general has made an excellent impact at the club since taking over from Vincenzo Montella, and the Rossoneri now find themselves unbeaten in their last 13 games across all competitions. They comfortably saw off Ludogorets in the last round and look set to make it a very tough evening for a struggling Arsenal side.
Milan have already taken part in 12 Europa League fixtures this season after starting qualifying early, and on only one occasion have they been beaten. San Siro has proved to be a fortress in Europe this campaign, with five of their six games there ending in victories and the other finishing goalless. Atalanta were the last side to beat the Rossoneri on home soil, and since then Milan have won five times, conceding just one goal in the process.
Tonight’s tie marks Milan’s first European last-16 game since 2014, and it brings together two sides that last did battle almost exactly six years ago. It was the Italian team who progressed to the last-eight of the Champions League thanks to a 4-0 thrashing on this very ground, with Arsenal winning 3-0 in the reverse fixture. Are we set for a similarly high-scoring contest this evening?
There’s just under 15 minutes left to go until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up tonight…
Milan substitutes: Antonio Donnarumma, Cristian Zapata, Manuel Locatelli, Riccardo Montolivo, Fabio Borini, Andre Silva, Nikola Kalinic.
Milan XI (4-3-3): Gianluigi Donnarumma; Davide Calabria, Leonardo Bonucci, Alessio Romagnoli, Ricardo Rodriguez; Franck Kessie, Lucas Biglia, Giacomo Bonaventura; Suso, Patrick Cutrone, Hakan Calhanoglu.
Arsenal substitutes: Petr Cech, Rob Holding, Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Mohamed Elneny, Reiss Nelson, Eddie Nketiah, Alex Iwobi.
Arsenal XI (4-2-3-1): David Ospina; Calum Chambers, Shkodran Mustafi, Laurent Koscielny, Sead Kolasinac; Aaron Ramsey, Granit Xhaka; Mesut Ozil, Jack Wilshere, Henrikh Mkhitaryan; Danny Welbeck.
Gennaro Gattuso has decided to name an unchanged Milan side to the one that started the Coppa Italia win against Lazio, with talented youngster Cutrone once again leading the line. The 20-year-old has scored four goals in his last six games and has netted on six occasions in this season’s Europa League.
Meanwhile, Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has made three alterations to the team that featured in their last outing, with Ospina, Ramsey and Welbeck coming into the starting line-up to replace Cech, Iwobi and the cup-tied Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
The two sides are making their way out onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off. The atmosphere inside the stadium is electric, with both sets of fans in fine voice.
HALF-TIME: MILAN 0-2 ARSENAL
Many Arsenal fans would have been fearing the worst at the start of the evening, but it's their side who enjoy a well-deserved lead at the half-time break. They've been in excellent form so far and played some wonderful football in the final third, where Wilshere and Ozil have been pulling the strings. Milan need to quickly regroup if they're to have any hope of getting back into this tie.
The two teams are making their way back out on to the pitch ahead of the start of the second half. Neither side have made any substitutions during the half-time break.
FULL-TIME: MILAN 0-2 ARSENAL
It's advantage Arsenal at the end of the first leg, and it's definitely a well-deserved lead for the Gunners. The north London side were certainly the better of the two teams throughout the course of the evening, resulting in an unusually poor Milan looking toothless in front of goal and uncharacteristically weak at the back. After a torrid run of form, that's exactly the sort of performance Wenger's men desperately needed.
