And Sansone is also booked for his part in the fiasco.
90' +3
Vitolo goes off after a red card!
Diego Costa gets yellow.
I'm going to take some credit for this turnaround. Samu Castillejo has been superb since coming on and he's played a big part in both goals, although not directly getting an assist.
Costa, as ever, talks his way into a booking in a dramatic finish.
RED CARD! Atletico are throwing their toys out of the pram. A spat on the field leads to a flurry of cards being shown and Vitolo, who only came on 20 minutes ago, is given his marching orders after hitting out at Sansone.
90' +1
E. Ünal has scored a goal for Villarreal! Assist by D. Bonera.
THREE minutes added on at the end of the second half.
GOAL! Villarreal have snatched a win! Castillejo's free-kick caused a lot of problems and Atletico couldn't get the ball away. It drops to Bonera and, though the shot is poor, Unal is there at the far post to tap it home.
Look what happens when you put the ball in the box! Villarreal have done it twice and scored twice.
89'
CHANCE! Wasted by Villarreal! Two brilliant headers are won in the final third, giving Bacca space on the right. The angle is extremely tight but he still elects to go for goal, firing well wide of the mark.
88'
CHANCE! Vitolo is found through the middle and the Spaniard turns brilliantly but has his path blocked by Asenjo, who charged off his line. The resulting corner comes to nothing.
86'
Villarreal continue to throw men forward. They've introduced attacking players so they don't really have much choice - and Atletico look to be up against the ropes.
85'
Fernando Torres enters the game and replaces Koke.
Final change for Atletico, who need a goal to keep their very slim title hopes alive. They call upon the experienced Fernando Torres, who scored the winning goal in 2015- the last time the Madrid outfit beat Villarreal. Koke is taken off.
83'
Suddenly, Simeone's decision to take off Griezmann is backfiring. Atletico were more than happy to sit back after taking the lead and they've paid the price.
82'
E. Ünal has scored a goal for Villarreal! Assist by Álvaro González.
GOAL! Villarreal have the equaliser! The hosts are finally happy to put the ball into the box first time and Alvaro Gonzalez's delivery puts the pressure on the Atletico defence, with Enes Unal rising the highest to head past Oblak.
Much better from Villarreal and that is the sort of ball the hosts have been crying out for all day.
81'
Gabi enters the game and replaces A. Griezmann.
Griezmann exits the field to a chorus of disapproving whistles from the home supporters, with the Frenchman replaced by the experienced Gabi.
Minute
Description
78'
Samu Castillejo enters the game and replaces Dani Raba.
It's a strange one with Atletico Madrid, as Diego Simeone continues to be linked with a move to the Premier League but his style of football certainly wouldn't be well received by the British press.
Final change for Villarreal and Castillejo is finally introduced, with Raba taken off.
77'
For two sides with European credentials, this is a very poor showing. Atletico away from home are pretty much as you'd expect but the performance from Villarreal has been extremely disappointing.
75'
Still no sign of Samu Castillejo, which is odd considering he's one of Villarreal's better players. They need the sort of cutting edge that he provides but it seems he'll be overlooked.
74'
Another attacking change for Villarreal, with Fornals replaced by Unal.
73'
E. Ünal enters the game and replaces Pablo Fornals.
Time running out for Villarreal, who seem to lack a back-up plan. A very uninspiring performance from the Yellow Submarines.
71'
Vitolo enters the game and replaces Á. Correa.
Atletico change, as Correa is replaced by Vitolo.
70'
CHANCE! That was the chance for Atletico to put the game beyond doubt! They hit on the break, with Costa cutting it across to Griezmann. You'd expect him to hit the target but his effort is high, wide and not at all handsome.
68'
A reminder that Villarreal can leapfrog Sevilla this evening but they'll need to turn the tie around to do so. An equalising goal would be enough but they haven't shown much to suggest they're capable of getting one.
67'
And Bacca swiftly joins him in the book after he protests about the penalty he wasn't given.
66'
C. Bacca gets yellow.
Rodri gets yellow.
Rodrigo Hernandez becomes the latest player in the book after a fairly blatant foul on Correa.
65'
BIG CALL! Bacca has barely been involved but he picks up the ball on the edge of the six-yard box, then going to ground under pressure from the Gimenez. I've seen them given!
63'
N. Sansone enters the game and replaces R. Soriano.
Right on cue, Villarreal look to the bench. Soriano is taken off and replaced by Sansone, giving fresh legs in attack.
61'
J. Giménez gets yellow.
CHANCE! Villarreal rob Griezmann of the ball and push men forward but they're crowded out in the final third. Trigueros gets a glimpse of goal but, under pressure, strikes wide of the mark.
Gimenez talks his way into the book after protests following that latest Villarreal attack, where he believes there was a foul.
59'
A really dull period of the game, with Atletico not wanting to attack and Villarreal being unable to craft opportunities. The game is screaming at the top of it's voice for changes as we enter the final half hour.
57'
Villarreal's approach really isn't working. They're trying to be too cute with the ball and are attempting to lure Atletico out but the visitors are far too controlled defensively. Simeone's system doesn't put their opponents under pressure and the hosts can't find the space to move into as a result.
55'
Corner for Villarreal, who remain patient with their build-up play. It's taken short to Trigueros and he drifts into a more central position before slashing a poor shot wide of the target.
53'
Villarreal having to soak up a fair amount of pressure at the moment, with Atletico sensing that this game certainly isn't over. The hosts are still yet to test Oblak fully but are moving the ball around well.
51'
Free-kick causes Villarreal problems as the delivery is spot on but it goes behind for a corner. Godin rises high at the far post but used Bonera for leverage, conceding a foul.
49'
SAVE! Mario Gasper charges forward from the back and strikes from distance but Oblak collects with ease.
47'
Already better from Villarreal as they're putting balls into the box, asking questions of the Atletico defence. They're yet to threaten from these aerial balls but at least they're putting some pressure on.
45' +1
Álvaro González gets yellow.
Alvaro Gonzalez picks up a yellow card after catching Griezmann late.
45'
Vrsaljko brings Soriano to ground and is fortunate to escape a booking but it does give Villarreal a decent opportunity. The free-kick is wide on the left and Trigueros fires it into the middle, where good defending gets the ball away.
KICK OFF! Back underway with Villarreal getting us started and now attacking to the right.
43'
A decent move from the hosts is thwarted by superb defending from Gimenez but it's the first bright spark we've seen from Villarreal. More of that please!
42'
Villarreal are finding some space out wide but there is absolutely no support in the box. I'm honestly not convinced Bacca is actually on the field, he's been invisible!
40'
This game started with a real edge and we saw plenty of tackles flying in. That has disappeared since Griezmann's penalty and it's playing right into Atletico's hands as a result.
38'
In true Simeone style, Atletico are more than happy to let Villarreal keep the ball - especially as the hosts are doing absolutely nothing with it.
36'
Back-to-back corners for Villarreal, with the first dealt with easily, and the second delivery from Trigueros is very high and poor. Yet more reasons for the home fans to express their frustration.
35'
The hosts continue to dominate possession but they're failing to put Atletico's defensive line under any pressure at all. I can't recall Bacca and Raba, who are leading the line, having any threatening moments.
33'
Villarreal haven't created too much of note so far and will be disappointed with their play in the attacking third, whilst Atletico have also lacked creativity - barring the penalty and the Koke chance that struck the frame of the goal.
31'
CHANCE! Fornals wins the ball back outside of the Atletico box and immediately sets sights on goal, firing a low shot wide of the target.
30'
Jaume Costa lunges in on Correa, conceding a foul, and Atletico have an opportunity to pump a delivery into the box. It's taken short before Griezmann clips a ball into the area that Asenjo gathers with ease.
28'
Rodri picking up plenty of touches in the middle of the field for Villarreal and he'll be keen to impress. He could make his international debut for Spain in the upcoming international break, whilst he is set to join Atletico this summer.
26'
Villarreal have seen a lot of the ball early on but they're yet to create too much in the final third. Oblak has had an easy time so far.
24'
OFF THE POST! Brilliant move from Atletico, as Vrsaljko drives a low cross into the area where Koko is lurking. He drills an attempt towards goal that bounces off the frame of the goal and behind for a corner, which comes to nothing.
23'
APPEALS! Villarreal believe they should have had a penalty, appealing that a defender handled the ball in the area, but the officials are not having any of it. The referee certainly isn't very popular in the stadium right now.
21'
I wouldn't say it was a dive per say but the contact on Griezmann was minimal. It's a very harsh decision and Jaume Costa has every right to be furious to be penalised for that decision. Villarreal need a response now.
20'
Penalty goal scored by A. Griezmann for Atletico Madrid!
GOAL! Griezmann sends Asenjo the wrong way from the spot and he never looked in doubt. Villarreal continue their protests and they've now got a real challenge aheadof them.
19'
PENALTY! Atletico awarded a spot kick after Griezmann tumbled in the area. Villarreal are convinced he dived and this could well be overturned. If he is judged to have dived, then the French striker could be in trouble.
That is very, very soft indeed. The referee is sticking with his decision though and Villarreal can feel extremely hard done by.
17'
The booking for Griezmann means he will be suspended for Atletico's first game after the international break against Deportivo. Fortunately, he'll be back again for the Madrid derby. How convinient.
15'
A. Griezmann gets yellow.
José Fernández Borbalán gets his card out once again after a poor challenge from Griezmann.
14'
Atletico Madrid have not beaten Villarreal since December 2015, when Fernando Torres scored the winner, which shows just how much Simeone's side have struggled in this tie.
12'
Pablo Fornals gets yellow.
A few hefty challenges flying around already and Fornals is penalised for an aggressive lunge on Saul.
11'
Villarreal trying to build a threatening move but Atletico's defence is coping so far. There's not much room for either side in central positions, forcing them out wide.
9'
Atletico seeing the lion's share of possession in the opening exchanges, which isn't too surprising. Villarreal will happily soak up the pressure and hit on the counter, though they have been sloppy with the ball so far.
7'
Atletico boast La Liga's best defence this season but they're looking vulnerable down the flanks. Filipe Luis is of course sidelined with a broken leg sustained in Thursday's victory over Lokomotiv Moscow, putting a lot of pressure on young Lucas Hernandez.
5'
Villarreal immediately hit on the counter and look dangerous until the ball bobbles back to a Oblak. Strong start from both sides!
4'
CHANCE! Atletico trying to squeeze their way through the Villarreal defence and it almost falls kindly to Griezmann. The host's defence recovers though and put the ball behind for a corner, which is easily dealt with.
3'
Villarreal did the double over Atletico Madrid last season and the Yellow Submarines have established themselves as a bogey side for Diego Simeone's side. However, the hosts have lacked consistency this season whereas Atletico have been largely unstoppable.
1'
KICK-OFF! We're underway at the Estadio de la Cerámica, where Atletico get us started and attack to the right in the first half.
SAVE! Villarreal give the ball away and Partey plays it to Griezmann, who then tees it for Saul. The Spaniard strikes towards goal but sees his effort comfortably saved by former Atletico goalkeeper Asenjo.
Good afternoon and welcome to our LIVE coverage of the La Liga clash between Villarreal and Atletico Madrid, where both sides are seeking victories to bolster their European aspirations.
Villarreal received a boost earlier today with Sevilla's surprising defeat to Leganes, which gives the hosts a chance to move fifth this evening with a victory. However, against an Atletico side who have lost just twice this season, the Yellow Submarines know the odds are firmly stacked against them.
Atletico Madrid advanced to the Europa League quarter-finals in midweek and are now looking to maintain that form heading into the international break, as they seek three points to consolidate their position second in the table. Valencia's 3-1 win yesterday put them within five points of Diego Simeone's side and the advantage could be extended here.
Atletico Madrid XI: Jan Oblak; Sime Vrsaljko, Jose Gimenez, Diego Godin, Lucas Hernandez; Angel Correa, Thomas Partey, Saul Niguez, Koke; Diego Costa, Antoine Griezmann.
Villarreal subs: Mariano Barbosa, Javi Fuego, Antonio Rukavina, Samu Castillejo, Victor Ruiz, Enes Unal, Nicola Sansone.
Villarreal boss Javier Calleja makes just one change to the side that defeated Las Palmas last weekend, restoring Gaspar to the defence. Rukavina therefore misses out and drops to the bench.
Atletico subs: Axel Werner, Fernando Torres, Sergio Gonzalez, Gabi, Kevin Gameiro, Stefan Savic, Vitolo.
Diego Simeone makes two changes to the side that defeated Celta Vigo last weekend, bringing in Partey and Correa. Gabi and Vitolo are the duo who drop to the bench, with Diego Costa and Antoine Griezmann continuing their attacking partnership.
Villarreal XI: Sergio Asenjo; Mario Gaspar, Daniele Bonera, Alvaro Gonzalez, Jaume Costa; Manu Trigueros, Rodri, Roberto Soriano; Pablo Fornals; Carlos Bacca, Raba.
HALF TIME! Not the best opening half of football but Atletico Madrid have the lead in rather fortuitous circumstances. Antoine Griezmann tumbled rather dramatically under pressure from Jaume Costa but then stepped up with ease, sending Sergio Asenjo the wrong way to give Diego Simeone's side an advantage.
Villarreal certainly have plenty of reason to be frustrated with the referee for his decision to award Atletico a penalty but to be fair they haven't shown too much to suggest they should be level in the game. It's been an aggressive performance from the hosts but a disappointing one, as they've lacked creativity in the final third.
It's been a customary performance from Simeone's side away from home, as Atletico haven't shown too much cutting edge in the final third but do have the lead. They did strike the post through Koke but they've mostly been happy to allow Villarreal to knock the ball around, especially as their hosts are doing nothing with possession.
FULL TIME! Villarreal have turned the game on it's head and rise to fifth in the table. They trailed for a long time after Antoine Griezmann's first-half penalty and struggled to get going. The introduction of Samu Castillejo provided inspiration though and the substitute was involved in the build-up for both of Enes Unal's goals.
Atletico showed absolutely no desire to secure their win and have been made to pay. Diego Simeone's side sat back as soon as they took the lead, then sacrificed Antoine Griezmann. Villarreal equalised almost immediately and any slim chances of the La Liga title being won is gone- they're now 11 points behind Barcelona.
Villarreal were poor for the majority of the game in the attacking third but the introduction of Castillejo changed the game. It's a massive win for the Yellow Submarines as they leapfrog Sevilla into fifth, after the Andalusian side lost to Leganes earlier today. Just four points seperate fifth from eighth, so there's plenty to play for after the international break.
