He fires a low cross in to the box, which rolls through the legs of Sanchez and into the feet of Rondon. The Hawthorns is rocking as Rodriguez gets the game underway for West Brom.
It is a huge day at the bottom of the Premier League table today and very much make or break for West Brom. Stoke’s defeat to Crystal Palace has kept the Baggies’ hopes alive, although failure to beat Spurs means relegation. A victory might not be enough either, as they would also be relegated if either Swansea or Southampton win their respective games.
Things might have been different for West Brom had they appointed Darren Moore sooner, after victories over Manchester United and Newcastle, coupled with a draw against Liverpool, gave them a slither of a chance at escaping the drop. Spurs will provide another stern test for the Premier League’s bottom side but recent performances suggest it will be a test they are ready to take on.
It has been another impressive season in terms of performances under Mauricio Pochettino but there has been no silverware to show for it once again. Tottenham could still finish as high as second this season, although a realistic finish of third would be a positive way to end the season.
The Lilywhites still have work to do if they are to secure a Champions League spot though, but a win today would put them within two points of ensuring a top-four finish. Chelsea are five points adrift of Spurs in fifth but face a tough test against an in-form Liverpool on Sunday.
There’s just over 15 minutes left to go until kick-off, so let’s have a look at how the two teams will be lining up this afternoon…
West Brom(4-4-2): Ben Foster; Allan Nyom, Craig Dawson, Ahmed Hegazi, Kieran Gibbs; Matt Phillips, Jake Livermore, Chris Brunt, James McClean; Jay Rodriguez, Salomon Rondon.
West Brom substitutes: Hal Robson-Kanu, Claudio Yacob, Jonny Evans, Boaz Myhill, Daniel Sturridge, Grzegorz Krychowiak, Nacer Chadli.
Tottenham XI (3-4-2-1): Hugo Lloris; Toby Alderweireld, Davinson Sanchez, Jan Vertonghen; Kieran Trippier, Victor Wanyama, Dele Alli, Danny Rose; Christian Eriksen, Erik Lamela; Harry Kane.
Tottenham substitutes: Son Heung-Min, Michel Vorm, Moussa Sissoko, Fernando Llorente, Lucas Moura, Ben Davies.
Good afternoon and welcome to our live coverage of today’s Premier League game between West Brom and Tottenham at the Hawthorns.
West Brom stick with the same side that beat Newcastle last weekend. There is only one change on the bench as Chadli comes in for Oliver Burke.
There are four changes to the Tottenham side that beat Watford on Monday. Alderweireld, Rose, Wanyama and Lamela all come into the side, replacing Mousa Dembele, Eric Dier, Son and Davies.
The two sides are making their way out onto the pitch, with just a few minutes to go until kick-off.
HALF-TIME: WEST BROM 0-0 TOTTENHAM.
The two sides are back out on the pitch, ahead of the start of the second half.
All square at the Hawthorns but both sides could have had the lead here. Kane was denied by a brilliant reaction save by Foster before glancing a header wide from the resulting corner. West Brom spent the best part of 40 minutes on the back foot but came close to scoring themselves when Rodriguez's cross-shot was cleared off the line. The Baggies need a goal to keep alive their survival hopes, so they will have to come out and attack in the second half.
FULL-TIME: WEST BROM 1-0 TOTTENHAM.
Unbelievable scenes at the Hawthorns as Livermore pokes the ball over the line to send the home fans wild and stave off relegation for a little while longer. It was an incredible performance by West Brom, who have now picked up 10 points in four games under Darren Moore; made better by the fact that seven of those points were against teams in the top-four. Tottenham were dominant throughout but found Foster and his defenders to be in fine form. The introduction of Lucas looked to have given Spurs the edge before Livermore struck in the dying minutes of the game. Their safety remains out of their own hands but the Baggies have done incredibly well to get to where they are and their fans certainly dare to dream.
