We're underway at Anfield.
Liverpool will need to respond to suffering their first defeat of the season, conceding a late goal in their Champions League clash against Napoli. The Reds were off colour and paid the price when Lorenzo Insigne found the net in the dying stages. Their winning run in the Premier League came to an end last time out against Chelsea as Daniel Sturridge's late stunner was needed to salvage a point at Stamford Bridge. Klopp needs to get his team back on track with a polished display against the champions this afternoon.
The two teams have established themselves as the leading contenders for the Premier League crown following their impressive start to the season. Liverpool were one of the few teams to beat Manchester City last season, triumphing three times over Pep Guardiola's men. They will be looking for an early edge over them once again to set the tone for the rest of the campaign.
Good afternoon and welcome to the live commentary of the Premier League clash between Liverpool and Manchester City at Anfield.
Manchester City were grateful to a late strike from David Silva to avoid dropping further points in the Champions League after Hoffenheim. City had a shocking start to their midweek game as Ishak Belfodil put the hosts ahead, but Sergio Aguero equalised almost immediately. Silva converted in the 87th minute to snatch the three points, extending his side's run of four-straight victories in all competitions. Guardiola's men are locked in on the same points as Liverpool in the Premier League and will be determined to prove that the Reds are not their bogey side with a strong performance at Anfield.
Let's take a look at the two teams this afternoon, starting with Liverpool.
Liverpool subs: Fabinho, Naby Keita, Daniel Sturridge, Simon Mignolet, Xherdan Shaqiri, Joel Matip, Trent Alexander-Arnold.
LIVERPOOL (4-3-3): Alisson; Joe Gomez, Dejan Lovren, Virgil van Dijk, Andrew Robertson; Jordan Henderson, James Milner, Georginio Wijnaldum; Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino, Sadio Mane.
MANCHESTER CITY (4-3-3): Ederson; Kyle Walker, John Stones, Aymeric Laporte, Benjamin Mendy; Bernardo Silva, Fernandinho, David Silva; Riyad Mahrez, Sergio Aguero, Raheem Sterling.
Manchester City subs: Danilo, Vincent Kompany, Leroy Sane, Nicolas Otamendi, Gabriel Jesus, Phil Foden, Arijanet Muric.
City have made four changes from their win over Hoffenheim in the Champions League. Kompany and Otamendi drop out of the starting line-up from midweek. Stones comes into the fold, while Laporte shifts over from left-back. Mendy is recalled to the side, while Bernardo Silva and Mahrez also start. Sane drops to the bench, while Gundogan misses out with a hamstring injury. Kevin De Bruyne remains sidelined with a long-term knee problem.
If you expected goals in the first half of the clash between Liverpool and Manchester City you've been left disappointed as the two sides head in at the interval goalless. There's barely been a shot in anger in the opening 45 minutes, with Mohamed Salah boasting the Reds' best chance, firing wide of the target. At the other end, City will feel that they should have had a penalty when Dejan Lovren kicked the back of Sergio Aguero's leg, but the referee waved play on. There should be more to come from both teams.
Both teams have struggled to bring their attacking players into the game. Salah along with Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane have been quiet, while City have not been able to get support in and around Aguero. The tactical adjustments at the break from the managers may decide the contest.
Thanks for joining our commentary today. Until next time, goodbye.
It's the international break next week, so there will be at least 13 days before the two teams return to action. Liverpool travel to Huddersfield for their next clash on October 20, while City are at home to Burnley. It should present both of the clubs with good chances to get back to winning ways after the stalemate this afternoon.
