AEK Athens take the kick off and we're underway!
Good evening and welcome to the live commentary of the Champions League group match between Bayern Munich and AEK Athens.
Bayern enter this match in a very good position to progress with seven points from their first three matches. They are four points off the pace in the Bundesliga, however, and disappointingly drew with Freiburg at the weekend. Victory is key tonight as Niko Kovac looks to win the group to increase the chances of a favourable last 16 tie.
AEK Athens were expected to struggle in a strong Group E and they have done. The Greek side have lost all three of their matches so far and were thoroughly outplayed when they hosted Bayern in their last Champions League fixture. They can still finish third even with defeat tonight, but they are up against it to avoid finishing bottom of the group.
Let’s take a look at the teams, starting with the hosts.
SUBS: Sandro Wagner, Rafinha, Renato Sanches, James Rodriguez, Niklas Sule, Meritan Shabani, Sven Ulreich.
BAYERN MUNICH (4-3-3): Manuel Neuer; Joshua Kimmich, Jerome Boateng, Mats Hummels, David Alaba; Thomas Muller, Javi Martinez, Leon Goretzka; Serge Gnabry, Robert Lewandowski, Franck Ribery.
SUBS: Panagiotis Tsintotas, Georgios Giakoumakis, Erik Moran, Giannis Gianniotas, Stratos Svarnas, Lucas Boye, Rodrigo Galo.
Bayern lead 1-0 at half-time thanks to Lewandowski's penalty. The hosts have been far from their best, but took greater control of the match after taking the lead. AEK Athens will be relatively happy with their first half performance, however. The visitors have not created anything of note, but there are plenty of positives. They have looked solid enough at the back and Ponce has caused Boateng and Hummels problems at times. AEK Athens are not out of this one yet, particularly considering how vulnerable Bayern are at the back.
Kovac will be pleased to see his side in the lead, though he might be concerned by the performance. His midfield has looked short of invention at times, which has resulted in a lot of slow, aimless passing. AEK Athens need to get Mantalos on the ball more in the second half and they will hope to see more opportunities for Hult to carry the ball out on the left. Kovac could turn to James soon to add more creativity to the midfield.
Thanks for joining our commentary this evening. Until next time, goodbye.
Bayern were nowhere near their best but Kovac will be delighted with the victory, which all but secured their place in the last 16 - they just need a point against Benfica next up to make absolutely sure. AEK Athens were outclassed in the second half. The visitors can be pleased with how they played early on, but they now have no chance of progression and need to win their two remaining matches just to have a chance of finishing third in Group E.
