And we are underway at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris!
Hello and welcome to live coverage of the Coppa Italia round of 16 tie between Sampdoria and AC Milan at the Stadio Luigi Ferraris.
Sampdoria entered the competition in the third round and beat Viterbese 1-0 to progress to the next round, before enjoying a 2-1 victory over SPAL in the last round to qualify for the second phase of the tournament. Last season, they got as far as the round of 16, but were knocked out after a 3-2 loss to Fiorentina. Milan are playing their first game in the Coppa Italia this season, after finishing sixth last season, and will be hoping to recreate a Cup run similar to last year when they reached the final, but missed out on lifting the trophy as Juventus who beat them 4-0.
SAMPDORIA XI (4-3-1-2): Rafael Cabral; Nicola Murru, Lorenzo Tonelli, Joachim Andersen, Jacopo Sala; Dennis Praet, Karol Linetty, Albin Ekdal; Gaston Ramirez; Gianluca Caprari, Fabio Quagliarella.
SAMPDORIA SUBS: Omar Colley, Vid Bellec, Gregoire Defrel, Maxime Leverbe, Dawid Kownacki, Alex Ferrari, Vasco Regini, Ronaldo Vieira, Riccardo Saponara, Emil Audero, Jakub Jankoto, Junior Tavares.
AC MILAN XI (4-3-3): Jose Reina; Ricardo Rodriguez, Ignazio Abate, Alessio Romagnoli, Cristian Zapata; Tiemoue Bakayoko, Lucas Paqueta, Franck Kessi; Gonzalo Higuain, Hakan Calhanoglu, Samu Castillejo.
AC MILAN SUBS: Diego Laxalt, Patrick Cutrone, Ivan Strinic, Fabio Borini, Riccardo Montolivo, Jose Mauri, Andrea Conti, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Andrea Bertolacci, Mateo Musacchio, Stefan Simic, Antoni Donnarumma.
The two sides are coming into this game on very different runs of form. Sampdoria have won five of their last seven games in all competitions (D1 L1), while Milan have only won one of their last six in all competitions (D3 L2). However, Milan's win against SPAL and Sampdoria's 2-1 loss to Juventus came in their last match.
The teams are coming out onto the field now, with kick-off only minutes away.
Sampdoria took a little while to find their rhythm at the start of the game, but once they did, they looked the more dangerous of the two sides. Ramirez, in particular, has had a few good chances for the home side and has come the closest to getting on the scoresheet. The Milan players have look frustrated for big parts of the first half as they struggled to get on the ball in the later stages of the half. They did come close through Higuain and Castillejo towards the end though.
Sampdoria will feel quite confident going into the second half and if they play the same way that they did in the first, then they have a very good chance of winning this game and progressing to the next round. Milan will need to be better in possession and stop giving the ball away needlessly if they want to get their forward players more involved as they chase the opening goal.
Both teams had some very good chances towards the end of the second half that could easily have given their side a decisive goal. Sampdoria had two attempts in quick succession through Quagliarella and Colley, with both missing the target by inches. Milan did have the ball in the back of the net through Higuain, but it was ruled out for offside. Both sides were preparing for extra-time towards the end though as the pace dropped out of the game and the players were moving the ball a lot slower.
Sampdoria dominated in the first 15 minutes of extra-time and came close to taking the lead through Ekdal. It was Milan who found the back of the net though as Cutrone got behind the home side's defence to volley his team into the lead.
That's all for tonight, goodbye!
So, Sampdoria make an exit in the round of 16 for the second consecutive season and will be hoping to bounce back when they travel to Fiorentina in their next Serie A game. Milan are through to the quarter-finals of the Coppa Italia and will want to continue their current winning run when they face Juventus in the Supercoppa Italiana final on Wednesday.
