Hello and welcome to the live text commentary for Atletico Madrid's Champions League clash with Bayer Leverkusen at Civitas Metropolitano.
Atletico enter matchday five of Champions League Group B placed third - two points behind second-placed Porto and six behind pace-setters Club Brugge. Catching the latter is an impossible task due to the head-to-head record but victory over Leverkusen could cut the gap to Porto. As things stand, Atletico are headed for the Europa League.
Leverkusen come into this one rooted to the bottom of Champions League Group B. They've taken three points from their opening four games and making it into the next phase of the Champions League is all but ruled out. They do still have hope, however, of catching Atletico and progressing to the next phase of the Europa League. But they have to win this.
Atletico have made four changes from the side that drew 0-0 with Brugge last matchday. Hermoso has replaced Savic, Witsel has come in for Koke, Morata has started instead of Lemar and Carrasco plays at Saul's expense.
Leverkusen have made five changes from the team that took a 3-0 beating at the hands of Porto last matchday. Tapsoba replaces Tah, Frimpong starts instead of Adli, Andrich replaces Demirbay, Amiri plays at the expense of Aranguiz and Hlozek comes in for Schick.
Porto have won 4-0 at Brugge in the group's other game. That means that, ahead of Atletico's clash with Leverkusen, they're five points behind Porto and six shy of Brugge. If they don't win this game they can kiss a place in the next phase of the Champions League goodbye - Leverkusen, in all honesty, already have.
Atletico go into the half-time break a goal down. They started well but fell victim to a smart opener from Diaby. The home side got back on level terms through Carrasco soon after, looking intent on turning the tide, only before another break see Hudson-Odio regain Leverkusen's lead. The German side are good value for the result as things stand.
Given what happened in the other game in this group earlier today, Atletico will enter the final matchday of the group phase rooted to the bottom should this result remain as it currently is. Diego Simeone will need to send a strong message to his players at the interval.
That's all for the live text commentary for this game. Until next time, goodbye.
Atletico travel to Porto next week while Leverkusen host Brugge. The former are currently a point clear of the latter and therefore in the driving seat in the race for third place. As has already been established, they're out of the Champions League for this season.
