Hello and welcome to the live commentary for the Bundesliga clash between Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund at Allianz Arena.
Bayern will move to the top of the Bundesliga with a win over league leaders Dortmund in what is Thomas Tuchel’s first game in charge of the Rekordmeister. The hosts sacked Julian Nagelsmann after a 2-1 loss to Bayer Leverkusen in their previous match, leaving them with just five wins in their last 10 league outings. Collecting 52 points from 25 games, Bayern are having their weakest Bundesliga season since the 2011/12 campaign (51 points at this stage), with it being the last time they did not end the season as champions of the division (BVB were).
Dortmund have won nine of their last 10 Bundesliga games and moved to the top of the league after thumping Koln 6-1 last time out. It is the first time that they have sat at the summit since the second matchday of the 2019/20 season, where they eventually finished 13 points behind Bayern, but will feel like they have a better chance of keeping their spot this time around with just nine games remaining. A win today will see them extend their advantage over Bayern to four points.
BAYERN MUNICH (3-1-4-2): Yann Sommer; Benjamin Pavard, Dayot Upamecano, Matthijs de Ligt; Joshua Kimmich; Kingsley Coman, Leon Goretzka, Leroy Sane, Alphonso Davies; Thomas Muller, Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting
BAYERN MUNICH SUBS: Serge Gnabry, Sadio Mane, Joao Cancelo, Daley Blind, Sven Ulreich, Ryan Gravenberch, Noussair Mazraoui, Jamal Musiala, Josip Stanisic.
BORRUSSIA DORTMUND (4-5-1): Gregor Kobel; Marius Wolf, Niklas Sule, Nico Schlotterbeck, Julian Ryerson; Julian Brandt, Jude Bellingham, Emre Can, Raphaël Guerreiro, Marco Reus; Sébastien Haller.
Bayern have dominated the Bundesliga for the last 10 years and showed their experience in the first half. The first goal may have been fortunate, but they made the most of Dortmund's moment of weakness and struck in another two quick goals to put the game beyond the side who led the league before the start of the game. As for Dortmund, they need to make sure that they keep the score down and remain controlled. The game might be past them at this stage, but they are still close to Bayern in the Bundesliga and must not let a second half thrashing hurt what has been a magnificent season until this point.
Bayern scored three goals before the break to take control of the game. After an even start, the hosts took the lead on 13 minutes through a bizarre own goal. Upamecano’s ball over the top of the Dortmund defence looked easy to deal with, but Kobel swiped at the ball, with it spinning off his boot and into the back of the net. Taking the momentum from the opener, Tuchel’s side then scored twice in five minutes through Muller. The Bayern legend first beat the offside trap to poke in De Ligt’s header, before reacting the fastest to stroke home a rebound after Sane’s effort was saved. Dortmund's best opportunity of the half came through Ryerson, but he lashed his attempt over from inside the box.
Bayern lead the Bundesliga by two points and will be looking to secure back-to-back wins in the league when they face Freiburg next weekend. However, they first have to host Christian Streich's side in the quarter-finals of the DFB-Pokal. Dortmund travel to Leipzig in the cup before hosting third place Union Berlin in the league, knowing a loss will see them move further down the table.
